We promised to come back for diner sometime.
Well, after a year, we decided “sometime” is now 😉
Called and got a reservation for 5:30PM. We would have preferred later, but we called only 2 days before.
The drive from West Redding to French Gulch at 5PM was actually great. With the sun slowly setting, the views of Whiskytown Lake, Shasta Bally and road to French Gulch were a treat!
Made it just on time and was warmly greeted by Sandy. Wow, she even remembered my name!
We were seated and already ready for the well known prime rib we had already ordered.
My wife originally was going to order a Chicken Salad (we shared the prime rib) but saw they had fish and chips.
We first ordered a round of drinks. I have a nice cold IPA and my wife went for a glass of cabernet which Sandy recommended.
My wife is pretty picky about her cabs – and after the first taste of the large pour – she was quite happy (I believe it was Salmon Run or Creek – nice house wine!!!)
Our diner salads arrived along with house made dressings. My wife’s ranch was creamy with just a touch of tarragon – a nice touch.
My blue cheese dressing was perfect. A nice creamy and sharp blend with small chunks of blue cheese!
On to the main course!
The prime rib lived up to its well known and praised quality and taste. We ordered a small – which is quite large actually.
A nice pepper/salt crust, perfectly cooked and one of the most tender prime ribs I have ever eaten! It was – simply delicious. The au jus and spicy horseradish on the side were almost ignored! Both were great – but the star of the show didn’t need too much help!
My wife’s fish and chips (she told them to hold the chips) was also really well done. In fact, a bit of a surprise. It was lightly battered, with a thin but crispy – almost tempura like. The fish (cod) was moist and sweet. By far the best fried fish we have ever had in Redding. No thin, greasy coating – just nicely done.
My loaded backed potato was also spot on. The side of mixed vegetable’s were not out of a frozen bag – but freshly cut, perfectly steamed with a light butter sauce. Wow, everything we were served were done perfectly and very tasty!
We actually finished almost everything (not like us). Just a small piece of prime rib to take home to enjoy the next day!
Overall I can’t recommend French Gulch Hotel enough.
We are looking forward to our next trip (much sooner!!!) and trying one of the steaks. A rib eye went past our table and even though I was stuffed – I wanted one then!!!
I would be open to trying them again for prime rib.
Great staff. Very friendly.
A little out of the way but definitely worth the trip. Highly recommend for the prime rib.
