We heard Freeland Café had a barbecue menu now. We decided to give it a try and glad we did. I ordered the brisket sliders which comes with 3 beef brisket on King’s Hawaiian slider buns. Topped with red onion, provolone, cheddar and their sauce. Comes with a side of coleslaw too! I really enjoyed them and they hit the spot. The meat was tender and see, and it was all very flavorful. I will definitely order those again!
My friend ordered the brisket dinner which came with a good portion of beef, brisket, potato salad and mac & cheese.
That was also a yummy and filling meal.
It was a little pricy at $53 including tip for 2 meals but it was beef and it’s expensive everywhere. It was a treat and we really enjoyed it. I got some pics of mine but my friend inhaled hers.

Very disappointing.
Stopped here for lunch a little after 1 PM. Ordered the fish and chips and my wife had a French dip. She said the meat was dry and had no real flavor. The batter on the fish and chips was saturated with grease. (See photo)
Service was mediocre at best.

The best part of the meal was the pint of beer. I would recommend you save your $50 (before tip) and go elsewhere.

Freeland Café is exactly the kind of locally owned spot every small town hopes to have. From the moment you step inside, there’s a welcoming, down-to-earth atmosphere that immediately makes you feel at home. The staff greet you with genuine warmth, and it’s clear they take pride not just in their work, but in their community.

The food at Freeland Café is everything you want from a hometown favorite—comforting, hearty, and consistently delicious. Whether you’re stopping in for a classic breakfast, a cozy lunch, or one of their daily specials, you can taste the care that goes into every dish. The portions are generous, the ingredients fresh, and the flavors simple in the best possible way. Their [insert favorite dish if you have one] is especially standout.

Service is friendly and efficient, even during the busiest hours. The team here strikes that perfect balance of attentiveness without ever making you feel rushed. It’s the kind of place where they remember your usual order and ask how your week has been.

Prices are more than fair, making Freeland Café a place you can enjoy regularly without feeling like you’re splurging. It’s the definition of a reliable, feel-good spot—one that locals love and visitors instantly understand the hype about.

If you’re anywhere near town, Freeland Café is absolutely worth a visit. Good food, kind people, and the charm only a truly local café can offer.

Me and my friend came into the bar to eat some food and drinks.

The bar was empty.

We sat down and we decided that we didn’t like where we were sitting so we wanted to move seats. The table we wanted to move to had sun. The lady immediately stops us and tells us that those tables were reserved and that we couldn’t sit there. They immediately put reversed signs on both the tables. My friend is black. They are racist. We sat there the entire time eating our food and no one ever showed up.

Working in the service industry for years and being an avid foodie, I have a lot of patience. It takes a lot for me to be truly unhappy. I wouldn’t go as far as to say I was unhappy, but certianly unwelcomed. I was annoyed with the lack of attention I got sitting at a table for near 20 minutes before I was able to order even a drink. The waitress was busy but the stress must have caught up with her also. She wasn’t very nice, apologetic on my wait or any of that. I had expected to eat there, that’s what I wanted to do. After feeling unwelcome and sitting there for some time I decided to order my food to go. I got a rueban sandwich and fries. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t anything to write home about. The bread was pumpernickle I think, but in the form of weak sliced bread. Which may have helped it’s overly sogginess. There wasn’t a lit of tang to my sandwich either. Very little saurkraut, not enough dressing. You’d think it wouldn’t be so soggy! Though had I of had the chance to eat it fresh I may have liked it better. The demographic was mostly older or elderly and local which I think is cool. I’m neither of those things so I guess I didn’t belong. In my mind in restaurants everyone should belong but hey thats me. I’m sure there are some good things about this place, I in my short visit wouldn’t be able to tell you about what they are.

We were warmly greeted in this small cafe by Deb the owner and seated in the bar area. Nancy was the bartender/server. I guess it had been a busy morning by the time we arrived because Nancy forgot to ring our order in. We had to wait in total an hour to eat and the server and owner apologized promptly. It was kind of annoying but we had no energy to leave and patiently waited for our meal. I had the eggs Benedict and they were tasty. The pancakes are huge and I felt like we kind of got upsold to get two each for me and my mom. They were still delicious and I appreciated Deb discounting our meal on account of the wait. Super cool cafe and vibes. They do have takeout, accessible parking, and outdoor seating which is nice.

Picture this. You roll into Freeland Café and Bar half awake, just looking for a decent breakfast. Then boom. Your whole morning shifts. You’re suddenly eating one of the most surprisingly unforgettable meals on the island

We came for breakfast and went all in. That Spam Musubi? Unreal. It showed up crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with flavor. I’m not exaggerating when I say it straight up stole the spotlight. This was not some throwaway breakfast side. It was the reason I’m still thinking about this place

We also dove into the Eggs Benedict, a scramble, and Steak and Eggs with a side salad that was so fresh and bright it could have its own fan club. The steak was juicy, seasoned just right, and paired perfectly with those eggs. Everything felt homemade and hearty, like someone’s grandma was back there cooking with love and zero shortcuts

Other folks are obsessed with the Fish and Chips and the burgers, and after seeing those plates come out, I get it. That’s next on my list, no question. Reviews don’t lie, and clearly the locals already know what’s up

So yeah, the wait was long. Like over an hour long. But it was worth it. This place is a local legend for a reason. It’s got that small town, old school vibe where people know each other, and the food is the kind that fills your stomach and your soul

The staff? Mostly awesome. A couple folks were absolute stars, super friendly and doing the most to keep things running. One server seemed a little short, but honestly it was slammed and probably just one of those mornings. No biggie, because once we got seated, it was all smooth sailing

Want to make the most of your visit?
Get there early or be ready to wait
Do not skip the Spam Musubi
Bring a good appetite and chill vibe
Take your time and soak it all in

Final word? Freeland Café and Bar is the real deal. It’s that rare mix of comfort food greatness, local charm, and food that makes you feel things. If you’re on Whidbey Island and miss this spot, you’re doing it wrong

Now go order the Spam Musubi and tell them I sent you

Went for a late breakfast. Too late for the biscuits and gravey so, gotta get there earlier! Pancake was outstanding in every way. Egg over medium, perfect. Crispy bacon requested, was not. To me crispy means you can break it, thar it has a crunch. Tasted good though! Good value, coffee was good and service was friendly and good and it was reasonably busy. Of course I’ll be back.

Great food, great service. After reading some great reviews and some petty ones we stopped by for a meal. Smart decision. Charming small-town diner with a huge added surprise. Mouth watering house-smoked bbq. Try the brisket. Incredible.

*** Hello, while this cafe may be a favorite for some people, I had a bad experience today when I walked in here. The woman who was waiting on tables had a LESS than pleasant demeanor when I asked if I could sit at a different table than where she was going to put me. I didn’t want to sit in the middle of the cafe and asked for a corner seat. After she somewhat begrudgingly agreed to my request, I sat down and she brought me a menu. I looked it over and about 5-10 minutes later I let her know I was ready if she was. She said, I have three other tables ahead of you in a negative, UN-friendly tone. I said, okay, that’s fine then. But after waiting another 5 to 7 minutes with no communication from her I LEFT. I decided WHY would I want to stay here at this restaurant with an UNFRIENDLY, NO ‘customer service’ waitress. I don’t know if I will ever return. ***
