While passing through Española, I decided to visit Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. The parking lot was busy around 1:30 PM, suggesting local popularity even after the lunch rush. Inside, the decor featured a pleasant retro burger joint style.
I ordered the original double burger combo, which included Freddy’s shoestring fries and a soft drink. The staff, including the cashier, were notably friendly and welcoming. I learned that this location has been a fixture in the Española dining scene for over a decade.
Having enjoyed steak-burgers at legendary spots across the country—particularly in Texas at places like Rose’s Burgers on Greenville Ave in DFW and the original Threadgill’s off of Lamar in Austin—I hold a high standard for grading them. When my order was ready, I was eager to try it.
Although the burger was good, I was quite surprised by how thin the two meat patties were; each was as wide as a piece of thin cardboard (approximately 4-5 mm thick), and the edges were unfortunately burnt to a charred texture. The fries were shoestring style but some were cut very short like less then an inch in length. While they tasted alright, their diminutive size was noticeable.
Given my high expectations, the food earns a middle-of-the-road score. However, it’s clear the local community enjoys it, as Freddy’s maintains a loyal following.

We arrived and it was close to. Closing……the manager/shift leader treated and greeted us like we were the first customers of the day. She looked tired and extremely busy but was all smile and very attentive. We had had a long day too and it was very much appreciated the level of courtesy she showed. THE FOOD was very fast and delicious!!! Very hot….very fresh ….was completely surprised and noticed the crew was all scrambling and working HARD. it was a pleasure to see that it was end of night/shift and they had a rush and no attitudes or yelling just hard diligent work. Great job you ALL should be proud!!! Thank you for a wonderful experience!!!!

The young people who work at this fast-food restaurant are always courteous and accommodating. My family loves to come here for food that tastes fresher and better than most fast-food places. Freddy’s custard is especially delicious and addictive The tables and floors are generally clean, and BONUS: the staff will not mess up your order!

I hadn’t eaten here since it opened and decided to give it another shot, but my whole family was shocked by the complete lack of flavor in the food. We even got ice cream for the kids, and it was absolutely nasty. I’ll never go back. I’m not sure what the hype is about this place, if there even is any!

I got the original Freddy double, which was quite good. I ordered the meal, and upgraded the fries to the cheese curds. They were pretty good, but a +$2 upcharge. I liked the fries too, they were thin and crispy. Their signature sauces weren’t anything special in my opinion. Overall it was a decent value for some above average fast food

The service was really nice, we had to wait only for 3-5 minutes for our food. The place was nice near the highway, so it’s easy to get in and out.

Soooo f-ing delicious! My friend told me about this place and the closest one is 45 mins away from Santa Fe. Well, it was more than worth the drive! Cheese curds were amazing! Burgers, fresh and delicious! French fries = awesome! And the root beer had just the perfect amount of carbonation! Excellent establishment, fast service and friendly workers. I’ll be back soon!
