Under the culinary direction of Chef Somoza, Flora’s menu captures the spirit of Mediterranean seaside towns from Saint Tropez to Capri to Marbella, spotlighting the bountiful seafood and vibrant produce that are hallmarks of coastal cuisine. With a passion for fresh ingredients rooted in his childhood in the Spanish countryside, picking wild blackberries and foraging mushrooms and wild asparagus, Chef Somoza is drawn to local, farm-to-table cooking. The Flora menu is made up of regional ingredients such as sweet corn, seasonal vegetables and fruits, local seafood and small farm sourced meats. A skilled pastry chef and boulanger, Somoza is also putting an emphasis on quality breads and an impressive offering of house-made pastries.

Such a beautiful place but the food was so incredibly disappointing. The best of it was the mushroom truffle soup which was delicious. The oysters while well chilled and fresh were tiny and not worth the price. The tuna crudo was bland and boring as was the beanzino. The worst however was the $75 surf and turf with a strip steak that was so tough I couldn’t even cut through the fat and again it was near flavorless

We had an excellent dinner here. Lobster tail appetizer was served on ice with a cocktail sauce. A nice combo! Mushroom soup was flavorful. The plum duck was spectacular : perfect medium rare with sweet potato and spinach side, and the plum sauce that sealed the deal. The dining is very sunny, all tables are in the sun. I have problems with the sun and the accommodate my request for a table change, which was not easy to find. They have valet parking and a parking lot of their own. A big plus in Newport.

Gorgeous Hotel and stunning inside and outside water views in the Flora Restaurant upstairs on the second floor. The service we received was exceptional and we were catered to from start to finish. The seafood was exquisitely prepared by Chef Miguel Samonza originally from Spain, and was absolutely delicious, creative, and a slice of heaven. The wine was perfection and the Sunset overlooking the Harbor was beautiful and romantic. Unbelievable experience.

Beautiful setting at the harbor. The hostess was so nice. Last minute request for seating outside was readily accepted. What a beautiful outside experience. Sunset views. Food was so good. Attentive staff. Although we didn’t stay at the hotel, they looked excellent and a cute evening party place…..high end. Would highly recommend to stay here and dine in this lovely restaurant.

I will simply think about the food here forever. Not only was the atmosphere, venue, views stunning but the staff & the food were out of this world! First all nothing is a miss, everything is made to perfection. Apps & salad were the perfect starter. The oysters were so fresh and sweet. The paella I’ll be dreaming about and will be making the drive again to eat. Everything was so harmonious and well seasoned. The surf and turf!!! Best steak on Rhode Island cooked to the perfect medium rare!!! The desserts cannot go wrong with the crème brûlée paired with a dessert wine. The owner and chef came to talk to us at the end of the night, their personality and love for the whole restaurant made this place even more worthwhile. If you’re looking for an unforgettable dining experience and food, check out Flora!!!!!!!

We recently dined at Flora at Gardiner House, and it was superb! The resort beautifully blends modern elegance with timeless luxury, making it an ideal spot for both overnight guests and casual diners. Upon entering, we were welcomed by a sophisticated lobby that set a wonderful tone for the evening.

We started with cocktails at the Studio Bar, (which we love either in the summer time or winter season), where the Gardiner cocktail was refreshingly vibrant, and the martinis were perfectly balanced.

Next, we moved to the dining room, warmly greeted by Food and Beverage Manager Vidal, whose attentive service made our experience exceptional. The dining room was beautifully arranged with stunning views and an impressive menu. Our knowledgeable server, Drew, along with his colleague Billy, ensured we had everything we needed and offered great recommendations.

For appetizers, we enjoyed Tuna Tartare, Beet Salad, flavorful soup, and delicious Octopus, which was the highlight. Our entrées included Halibut, Scallops, Paella, and Duck, but the desserts truly wowed us, especially the special birthday dessert that Drew presented with a candle.
Overall, it was an extraordinary dining experience that I highly recommend. We can’t wait to return to Flora!

Best,

Oct 2025: Had oysters, mushroom soup and the lemon sole. The oysters were fine but they only had a single variety. The mushroom soup was excellent, very flavorful. I also thought the sole was first rate.

We had the absolute pleasure of dining at FLORA in Rhode Island, and it was nothing short of exceptional. The food was absolutely delicious — every dish was bursting with flavor, beautifully presented, and clearly made with care and creativity. What really elevated our experience, though, was our server. He knew the menu inside and out and guided us through it with genuine enthusiasm and insight. His recommendations were spot-on, and thanks to him, we got to try dishes we might have otherwise overlooked. You can really tell that everyone here cares about what they’re doing. Highly, highly recommend!

The food was amazing!! The chef came over to check on us as well make sure we didn’t need anything. The waitstaff was attentive and informative. Watching the sunset while eating dessert was like a cherry on top of the evening. Highly recommend this beautiful restaurant!

We had reservations at 5 pm, and the atmosphere was wonderful, especially with the sunset over the water. The drinks were excellent, and while the tuna tartare was good, it had a bit more corn than expected. The lobster pasta special with caviar was also delicious but a little heavy on the corn. The scallops were flavorful, though served in a high-sided bowl, which made them tricky to eat, and once again, the dish had quite a bit of corn. While the overall experience was pleasant, there was a small mix-up with our bill, as we were charged for a more expensive wine than we had ordered. Overall, for such a well-regarded establishment, we had hoped for a bit more, especially given the price point.
