Social Profile:

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Fish is wild, native or ethically-farmed and sustainably caught on day boats using specific and targeted method of fishing. Crab comes direct from the fishermen in Whitby, scallops are hand-dived and oysters come from Lindisfarne. Game comes from small local farms and estates which have less intense and smaller shoots to maintain the delicate balance in population control. Wild food is foraged from the local countryside by the chefs. Menus take inspiration from the sea, the forest and the Yorkshire countryside. Head Chef and owner, Stephen Andrews creates a small, regularly evolving a la carte menu of simple seasonal plates allow the ingredients to shine.

Cosy restaurant serving sustainable fish & game dishes amid laid-back surroundings.

The best restaurant in York that we’ve visited thus far (and have tried a lot including a well regarded Michelin starred restaurant!). We’ve visited twice now on two seperate occasions years apart. The quality of produce is out of this world. The restaurant provides a board which details where each produce was caught or grown. For some of the produce this is even traced back to the very boat it was caught on. Each dish is innovative and bursting with flavour.
The presentation of dishes is beautiful. We visited for Valentines this year as the restaurant is perfect for a romantic date night. It isn’t the cheapest of restaurants but we didn’t wish to opt for a cheap restaurant as we wanted a beautiful meal with quality produce and that’s what we experienced. We chose an item from each section of the menu from snack to dessert and everything was nothing less than perfect. The negative reviews I have seen seem to be from those who aren’t familiar with fine dining type restaurants which does seem unfair to the business. A simple google search would have made it clear on the type of restaurant Fish and Forest is. This is an amazing restaurant and we will be returning on special occasions. Having visited on two very different occasions years apart yet witnessing the same consistency and quality means this business deserves nothing less than five stars. The staff are very attentive and knowledgeable on the menu. The seating is incredibly spacious which is a rarity nowadays as businesses tend to squish as many tables in the building as they can manage. The customer is truly at the centre of the business and the customer experience is very much considered. You are taken through the entire menu and in my opinion this is one the best restaurants that York has to offer.

Sadly there have been two poor reviews recently – a worryingly trend. Our experience was no different other than the service was seemingly better during the meal.
We knew it was a limited menu but this means each dish needs to be on form.
Venison was the only meat available both as a starter and main. Not great so I chose it as a main. The meat was spongy. I’m not going to speculate why as it can be for a number of reasons. Edible but nothing I’d like to repeat.
The fish dishes were poor. Neither the fish nor seafood gave any indication that they’d recently seen the sea. The only bright spots were the puddings and the bread.
Wine list short but passable.
At over £100 a head we won’t be back.

An odd restaurant evening to review. The food & wine I had was delicious but I was struggling to find alternatives I wanted on the limited but complex menu. Only meat on offer was venison (or game lasagne) , lovely if you like the beetroot theme which i did, but a small amount of meat for the hefty 33 price. My wife and daughter less lucky on their picks. They enjoyed the deconstructed apple struddle but I did not see anything I fancied out of the 3 choices on offer. Maybe needs some simpler additional dishes to widen range on offer, otherwise limited menu a risk to please everyone at this price level

Really lovely experience here, having done a bit of research. Menu presented on a board by our very knowledgeable and lovely server, Ellie. Stunning presentation. Incredible flavours. Would recommend both the venison and fish options having had both. And the incredibly complex homemade brown sauce if it is an option. Dessert was really impressive in flavour, a take on eton mess, and I’ve never had strawberries like it. Fabulous service, thank you!

We went based on recommendations from Freya who also greeted us at the door with a warm and gregarious smile! (She had informed us of a deal the restaurant was running earlier in February.) We had a fabulous meal, very refined and certainly tasty. The cod was very delicate and tasty and the venison was cooked exactly to my liking! The service from our servers (apologies we couldnt remember their names) were warm and friendly as well and very knowledgeable about the food and drink. Definitely will come again

Impeccable service and very nice food. Service was just the right side of attentive.
The menu is quite small but varied. Stone bass and daal was eye opening. Venison with whisky sauce was delicious but the highlight was halibut with green peppercorn sauce. 10/10

Absolutely delicious food, where every single bite is an extraordinary experience. We with my partner were positively shocked.

I’d say, fish and forest definitely should be on “must visit” list if you ever visit York.

The team in the restaurant is super friendly and they kindly found seats for us despite not having booking reservation.

We had a lovely experience visiting Fish & Forest for dinner.
The staff were really friendly and welcoming and the food was top notch. Some really unusual dishes and stunning flavours/textures. Really interesting wine list too with some lovely natural wines.
Really busy buzzy atmosphere. Highly recommended.

We’ve eaten at the restaurant in its previous location and enjoyed it. This for me was a step up in terms of food, service and ambiance. The team should be very proud. There was four of us and the evening was great. The price reflects the quality and service and is just right. We’ll be back.

I went for a Saturday lunch and had a delicious and varied set of dishes, all of them well worth trying. The tuna, mallard and dessert with oat biscuits were both particularly great and worth visiting for those alone.

For my second visit, the venison, sea bass, beetroot, crab tart, scallops and desserts were all fantastic. They also have a delicious white Rioja and a syrah which are well worth trigjg.

One downside is that I strongly recommend that they install some sound proofing, as a loud group near us reverberated throughout.

Finally, the cocktails (Peru to Japan and Chocolate Old Fashioned) were brilliant, and very inventive.
