Last Friday, we decided to try it again – deciding that maybe it was just too much for them to handle switching types of restaurants and that our bad experience was a one time event.
We had been to the Muddy Cantina and loved the food before it switched to the current steak menu.
So last Friday, we sat at the bar and had a drink before our 5 pm reservation. We were offered a menu at the bar – we assumed this was the short menu that was mentioned to us at our first visit. However, once we were seated the same menu was given to us. We feel this is a very short menu – it has a handful of steaks and a handful of other dishes…not much selection in our opinion.
We had the ribeye and fries, creamed spinach and Mac and cheese. While the manager told another couple at the bar that while these prices are more than the Laurel steakhouse, the quality of the meat is better. We disagree – while the steak was good size – it didn’t have any great quality. We found it not as flavorful as the Laurel – but they are prepared differently. The Laurel has more of an outside grill taste. The Mac and cheese was good, not watery or sticky. The spinach was fair and the fries were pretty generic. You get a lot more food at the Laurel for less money and we think the Laurel is much better tasting.
We didn’t feel great a couple hours after eating, not like food poisoning but like after you ate too much garlic or spice. We didn’t over eat and while they do provide a roasted garlic clove with the steak, we didn’t eat it.
It was not busy when we left at 6 pm, just a few tables seated. This might be a sign that others agree with us…considering how busy they have been.
We would definitely go back for drinks and try appetizers, but it’s unlikely we would eat dinner there again. As my husband said, “It was just good enough. Nothing special.”
My only complaint with F&W is how they do reservations. I know it’s only opened recently but it seems hard to get in on the weekend. They don’t accept walk-ins on Friday/Saturday and are closed Sunday. At least they have a phone number to call but I would recommend partnering with Google in the future to do your booking online, most other restaurants do this currently. It took me almost a month to finally get to F&W because each time I called the person working told me something completely different when it came to reservations. Either they don’t do them, only on weekends or come in and maybe I could get in. Again it’s the early stages of the restaurant but from what I read this was the main complaint people had of the restaurant. This should not deter anyone, the food is amazing. I would highly recommend stopping in, just have a reservation. Hope this helps!
Thinking it may have been a fluke, we decided to try it again since it is a local restaurant in our small town.
The wedge salad was okay and large enough to share. I had the swedish meatballs. I had to send them back as they were barely warm. When i got home i realized i never got the lingonberries or pickled cucumbers that were suppose to come it.
My husband had a sirloin steak, it was quite tasty and we’ll seasoned. The asparagus was delightful. Mashed potatoes and creamed spinach were a large servings.
All our food was cool shortly as none of the plates or metal serving dishes were heated. Cold food is just not as appetizing. They are off our radar for future dinners.
First this isn’t a whiskey bar, it’s just a bar. When you go to a place claiming they are a whiskey bar they need more then 20 different bottles on the menu.
Second, we had a group of six adults and they sat us at a bench table and it was tight.
Third, The food was ok at best, this isn’t a steakhouse it’s a cheap restaurant. The food came somewhat warm and the French fries are frozen not fresh and tast bad. Order mushrooms to go with the steaks the you get about two small mushrooms sliced up. Not worth the 7 mile drive.
Fourth, We ordered drinks, appetizers, drinks, dinner, drink, and deserts. We weren’t even done with our deserts and the rude “manager” came over and told us we needed to leave to they could seat other people at this table. She said that she would sent over the server with our checks. The server wasn’t even done with getting us the checks and another person came over asking us when we would be leaving the table.
Save your self and don’t go there.
Fast forward to dinner. Tenderloin was over cooked and under seasoned. Sent it back. Came back under cooked and tasteless. Got server again, who asked if I would like to speak to a manager. Manager came over and started telling me she saw them put it in the fire, so it should be fine. She also started explaining they wash their meats with a cooking process known as sous vide. I’m very aware of that cooking technique. The steak was still poor. Overall, a poor experience with poor food and poor service.
