Vincent DePhilippis Born in New York NY, raised in Naples Italy returned to New York City at the age of 18. Vincent DePhilippis and Madeleine Manfredi from Nimes France met in New York NY (Mamma and Papa) married in 1925, then settled in Westchester Pennsylvania. Then moved to San Diego in 1947 where they opened an Italian market named Cash & Carry Italian foods on India Street in San Diego. 1950 was the beginning of what has become a very successful line of family restaurants that are today know as Filippi’s Pizza Grottos that are owned and operated by original family members of the founders. The best spot to eat incredible pizza. I like the low key hidden spot. I always enter through the back door and is why i love it. And I really enjoy the dark theme. This Filipis has the best pizza in the north county location. All you need is ONE OR TWO slices and your set.

Gone downhill, and prices are up. My pizza cost $30 with two toppings. sauce used to have great flavor and the cheese spread all over the pizza edges. They are really skimping on the toppings and charging so much. I would say they have cut the volume of toppings by one third to one half. I would be glad to pay the price if it was the way they used to make it. The people are nice this must be management’s decision

Good service, food was pretty terrible. . Had the Hawaiian Pizza and the lasagna, spaghetti, ravioli combo dinner. Portions were very large but food tastes like a middle school kid cooked it.

First time here and the food was amazing. Pulling a cheesy piece of zaa off the whole pie reminded me of some of my favorite cartoons as kids when you see the cheese go for miles. Tiffany was also the best. Great server. She got me my bucket of ranch I asked for. Will definitely be back again.

The pizza is very heavy and stuffed with ingredients. Very good. The service is always good. The only complaint I have is it always looks older and worn in the restaurant. I guess I’m saying it needs updating. Definitely worth a try. I’ve not tried their sandwiches but they are huge. I imagine they are as good as the pizza.

We went to Filipis for a celebration of life lunch. We had the upper room as you walk in the front door to the right which was perfect for our large group. The staff was exceptional and we never wanted for anything. Everyone was just amazing, super friendly and helpful. The food was wonderful as always!! I highly recommend Filippis, they will not disappoint!

Accessibility: there is a ramp to enter the building through the back door and there are accessible/handicap parking spots back there in the free parking lot behind the building. The only bad thing is that there is curb blocking the path from the accessible parking to go toward Felipe’s so if you are in a wheelchair you would have to go all the way around the curb then go through the alleyway to enter the back door, or go around the whole building to the front of Felipe’s. Both the front and back doors are pull doors to enter. They do have restrooms in the back of the restaurant.
