Reviews
We were celebrating a birthday and one of the waiters made rude comments to our girls for posing and taking pictures against the back wall.
Then he made a big show out of asking if someone else wanted to serve our table. Killed the entire mood. Speaking of mood, our candles were not even lit, while other (completely empty) tables had lit candles (see pictures).
The glass of scotch they brought me was sticky and left a red mess on the table (see picture). What made it even worse, is that this sweet cherry syrup somehow made into my glass of Lagavulin (my usual drink of choice), ruining the scotch. I was going to send it back, but as someone that once worked in the service industry, I just couldn’t.
Speaking of alcohol, the cucumber vodka we ordered did not have any vodka in it. They brought us a glass with a whole twig of mint, some cucumber water, and no alcohol. Two more vodka drinks that were served also lacked the alcohol. They were not sent back either. We just used them in place of soft drinks.
I am also not sure why my glass of scotch took over 20 minutes to get to me while mixed drinks were coming at an ok (although still slow) pace.
The only reason I am not giving this one star is because one of the waiters was able to bring me a rare steak done the correct way, which was beyond what I expected after the rest of our experience.
The food was your average steakhouse fare, with a Moroccan twist. Nothing special, just ok. Certainly not worth the price all things considered.
I was treated to an evening filled with surprises and great food and drinks along the way. I have always wanted to go to Fhima’s…. and it didn’t disappoint….The decor set the vibe for fun and mystery…
Many thanks to Will, our server, the chef, for flavorful and fabulous paella and the chicken tagine, oysters, and the rest were at their best!
I split the Moroccan sampler with a friend. We enjoyed the dips but the bread (M’Smen) was very strange. Sort of like pita but doughy, soft and wet on one side, like it wasn’t cooked all the way through. I Googled it later and what we had looked nothing like any of the photos that came up. The Matbucha is really spicy, which isn’t mentioned on the menu, also when we asked about the dips our waiter didn’t mention it.
Our waiter was working 6 tables with 2 people each, so we had to flag him down to order. I would have liked to have gotten dessert but it took so long for our sampler to come out and get his attention that we ran out of time. When we asked for the check he brought the wrong one, which wasted more time.
Our martini’s were great, and served in vintage glasses that complemented the atmosphere.
I’ll always love this location, regardless of what restaurant is currently occupying it. The original tilework, glass, light-fixtures and bar are worth the trip for anyone who appreciates Art Deco.
The food how-ever was good.
I’ve been here multiple times, but the rest of the group has not. By categories of stars available here, it comes out on top. And overall, we had a great evening and incredible food. But there were issues. So I’ll break this down with a pros/cons list.
PROS:
*First of all, is there a more elegant and beautiful space? The atmosphere is over the top, and delicious in its own right!
*We were greeted immediately; traffic during construction and rain had been horrible, so our group arrived at differing times. This was not an issue for the reservation. Those of us there already had a drink at the bar, and paid our bar tab before being seated at the table.
*Eli personally greeted us and gave the group his family’s background.
*We all did the Moroccan Tasting & Wine Pairing, tempted by it on the website at $75pp
*The wines and four courses were overall excellent as far as flavors were concerned.
CONS:
*While waiting for others at the bar, I ordered a Negroni. The bartender made it with a very floral-forward gin. I couldn’t stand it! I said I wasn’t a fan, and couldn’t drink it. No remake was offered, which I found somewhat remarkable.
*Part of the Moroccan tasting (incidentally; we just returned from Morocco) included a seafood tagine. The glory of a tagine is, in part, the presentation of it in it’s beautiful cookware. We were served it already plated, but I noticed other tables of 6 or more were served their tagine in the cookware. Food good; presentation not.
*One of our diners is deathly allergic to pistachios, which we made known to staff immediately. Luckily I noticed the pistachios on the affected party’s plate. Honest mistake in a prix fixe meal, but a warning to all to stay attentive, whatever the restaurant.
*The meal is advertised on Fhima’s website as $75pp flat fee, 4-course tasting with wines. The bill ran $95pp. I showed the website’s screenshot. They reran the bill, were apologetic, and all ended up ok. But by this time, we all felt so bad for saying anything. At the same time, we felt bad about the overcharge. So we left Fhima’s feeling bad, when we wanted to be happy.
OVERALL:
Despite a few negatives, we loved Eli’s personal attention, the delicious food, the interesting wines, and the gorgeous ambience. The “cons” were a fluke, as every restaurant can have, but as a reviewer, I also need to point out that they happened.
In any case, I plan to return. Everyone has an off night.
