The bar tender was rude from the start, she barked at us for IDs which is fine, we are all in our mid to late 20s so I can understand places wanting to ID, that’s the law. Then after we gave IDs, the bartender just started barking at us for our orders, said “use your big boy voices” was rude to my girlfriend and said “next time learn to order drinks together” when she didn’t even take our order fully?
She harassed all of us for our drink orders and we unfortunately stayed to finish them. She rushed our orders despite us being the only active people at the bar. It genuinely blew my mind, it is your job to serve customers and make them feel comfortable. She was in her 40-50s, bad American traditional tattoos, and long hair and had a Princess Leia shirt. I didn’t even waste my time to get her name because the service was genuinely that bad.
They also somehow ran out of gas for the tap, and was instead given a worse beer because the dogfish head was kicked.
Lucking Mcgillins is right down the block, we were able to go in and be greeted by friendly staff and then food and drinks were amazing.
I would recommend ignoring Fergie’s and going to Mcgillins, I have never in my life witnessed a bartender watch 10 people walk in and ruin their birthday because she can’t handle stress.
We went in for a proper pub moment and got exactly that: warm, lively atmosphere, brilliant staff, and food that makes you instantly wonder why you don’t live nearby. The vibe is spot on. It’s one of those rare places where you can almost forget you’re in the US… you genuinely get strong Dublin energy ( ), but then you remember you’re still in America because someone nearby is probably talking about the Eagles and but there no unnecessarily large TV involved insight. Mad. Wonderful. Perfect.
Now let’s talk food.
We had the fries and the tater tots (or “tata tots” as they deserve to be called because they were that good), and both were absolutely perfect. Properly crisp, perfectly seasoned, hot, fresh, and dangerously moreish. You know when you take one bite and instantly think, “Right… we’re in trouble here”? That. Exactly that.
Beer wise: great American beer, plenty of choice, and served properly. None of that “here’s a warm pint in a glass the size of a small bath” nonsense. Just solid, satisfying pints and a proper pub feel. The kind of place where you can sit, settle, talk rubbish for an hour, and somehow accidentally stay for three.
And the real standout?
The whole front-of-house seemed to be run by one very charming lady, and honestly… hats off to her. She made the place feel welcoming, organised, and effortlessly friendly. Not the fake “Hi I’m your server and I’ve been forced to smile by corporate policy” kind of friendly. More the “you’re in the right place, relax” kind. She absolutely made the experience.
Bottom line:
Fergie’s is a proper Philly gem. Great atmosphere, great food, great beer, and genuinely warm service. It’s the kind of pub you leave thinking, “Yep. That’s how it’s supposed to be.”
Miss this? Don’t
They have options for vegetarians and a good selection of beers.
While I’ve never had bad food, service, or a bad pint here, its not one of the public houses I go out of my way to visit for either food or drink. The menu has a mix of bar food standards and Irish influenced fare, but overall it’s middle of the road in quality.
