I recently dined here with a group of four for a birthday dinner. Overall, the food itself was excellent — really vibrant flavours, well-balanced spice, and beautifully presented dishes. You can tell there’s care put into the cooking, and everything we tried tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared. We all really enjoyed the duck confit leg.

That said, the value just didn’t match the quality. After sharing several dishes (5 to be exact), the bill came out to about $50 per person, which felt steep considering the portion sizes. Unfortunately, despite spending that much, we actually left the restaurant still hungry. $21 for a glass of white (la grande ourse) when a bottle itself in retail costs around $40 is diabolical.

If you’re going for flavour alone, it’s a great spot. But for the price point, I was expecting more generous portions or a more filling experience. Delicious food — just not the best value for a group dinner.

4 stars for the food but 2 stars for the ambiance.
FOOD:
• Oysters: oysters with a twist of south east asian flavor. Cilantro and roasted garlic was an idea that really surprised me.

• Confit Duck leg curry: the curry was great but the duck meat is a bit dry.

SERVICE: standard

VIBE: I was there in a summer day, and it feels really hot as the whole restaurant is open concept. I did not appreciate at all when I choose to sit inside but still feel like sitting in the patio in a hot day.

Kitchen was totally open, making the place mixed with whole bunch of different smell that some don’t belong with each other.

The place is noisy and doesn’t give a vibe that make me willing to pay that much for my meal. It giving me a house party vibe and I’m in someone’s kitchen.

Food was good but wasn’t up to that pricing. And overall the ambiance destroyed my experience eating there.

This review is in reference to the collaboration dinner with and at gateau ghost hence why I didn’t give a rating for atmosphere.

Oyster: delicious bite. Salty, sweet from the palm sugar, fragrant coriander and shallots, no notes. I plan on dressing oysters like this in the future at home. So good!

Hokkaido scallops: I’ll start off the the good. The flavours were strong and I loved the space. The shrimp paste was so delicious and added such a unique savoury element to the dish. The crunch bits of fruit also added great texture. Now I don’t feel like the scallops were the star of the show and that’s where I feel like the dish fell a bit short. If you’re going to use imported Hokkaido scallops then they should stand out but they kind of fell into the background. We were also a seating of two but received three leaves/wraps. It would have made more sense to have four leaves or a shareable number. The leaves were also lacking in flavour, maybe shiso would have been a good choice. But nothing was terrible and tooo away from the dish, I simply wanted more bites.

Fish curry: again I’ll start with the positives. The curry itself was spicy and comforting. The fish was cooked really well and I loved the blistered skin. We finished the whole bowl and were even offered more by the chef behind the counter which was so nice. He explained that this was a northern style curry, hence its departure from the more well known coconut milk curries. The dish was served in a bowl but we were given sharing plates which didn’t really work. I ended up just using the rice bowl bc the broth would just run off the plate. I also think the fish could have been better seasoned. The veggies in the curry were also prepared separately (blanched) so they were pretty bland. I would have liked for the veggies to be cooked in the broth but it was fine. The curry itself was so strong in flavour that it carried the rest of the dish.

Dessert: 🙁 unfortunately we didn’t like this one. Not enough coconut flavour, no burnt/char flavour and the crisps/bark didn’t taste like sesame either. Everything was just a little off the mark.

Overall the Thai favourites dishes overshadowed the gateau ghost dishes by farrrr. My review for gateau ghost is on their Google as well. Will definitely be coming to Thai favourites for dinner. Thanks!

2nd time visiting this place and it hasn’t disappointed! The last time in my wife and I ordered the rustic curry mussels, the lamb chops, the cha siu short ribs, and the black cod sour curry. The mussels and lamb chops were both of our favorites. I probably wouldn’t order the short ribs again. They were good but I wanted to be blown away for $66. From our first visit, I recall the chicken wings and the confit duck leg curry being all-stars! This place is a must visit in Toronto. We will continue to come back!

Food: 5/5. Worthy of Michelin Bib Gourmand recommendation. Our favorite was the Ceviche and Iberico Pork. The flavor in this restaurant packs a punch. Sweetness, spiciness and some tangy flavor creates the perfect umami. The Char Siu was good but did not find it worth the $66 tag. Would go with lamb next time probably. The oyster is great but I found all the seasoning drowns the oyster flavor.

Service: 3/5. For a restaurant at this caliber, so many details were missing. One of the toilet did not flush properly. There is a pool of water by washroom entrance. Our water was not refilled despite the staff noticing it. Our dessert had no spoon when it arrived. This is despite sitting by the bar which has the highest staff presence. I think it would have been okay for casual $50 meal, not a $100+ experience.

Ambiance: Reservation is recommended to get one of the tables. The bar and some seating area have smaller table. Although I think it adds the ambiance of being intimate.

Overall: 4/5. Some of the best food I had in Toronto but service can definitely be improved.

I had a reservation here on a weeknight and overall had a really good time. Finding the place was a little tricky at first – it has a café in the front and the neon sign just says something like “Thai BBQ,” so it’s a bit more discreet than I expected. Once inside, the entryway is also a little unusual: you walk through a pretty dark corridor past the kitchen before it opens up into the dining room. Honestly, it almost feels like you’re sneaking in through the back, but it does add a bit of drama to the arrival.

The dining room itself is comfortable, with seating along the windows on one side and against the far wall on the other, with a wide corridor running down the middle. It’s not cramped, which makes it feel easy to settle in.

We went for the tasting menu with the wine pairing, which I think is a great way to get to know what they’re all about. The staff brought out the first few courses pretty quickly, and they were a strong start. Each dish felt really balanced – flavours were layered with a little sweetness and a gentle spice that made them both interesting and very easy to enjoy.

Not everything hit perfectly, though. The palate cleanser – a sorbet with tomato and mushrooms – was a bit of a miss for me. I’m usually open to adventurous combinations, but this one was tough both visually and flavour-wise, and since it was followed by another savoury dish, it didn’t feel necessary. The last course, a heavier fish and rice dish, also felt like it would have worked better earlier in the progression. I would’ve loved to finish on something lighter, maybe a small dessert instead of the palate cleanser.

That said, the overall experience still stood out. The food is inventive without being overwhelming, and the flavors are thoughtful and well-executed. The staff were another highlight – knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive throughout the night. Despite a couple of missteps in the flow of the menu, I left feeling like it was a worthwhile and memorable meal.

Reservations are necessary if you want the dining area seating, high tops were available for walk in.

Did the tasting menu and some of the favs were the NZ lamb chops and cod, and the basil ice cream bar. Ice cream bar was separate and not part of the tasting menu. The punch up cocktail was also really good, could barely taste the alcohol and it was sweet.

What an experience! The restaurant was very accommodating to our needs since we had a newborn with us. They tucked us away in a corner so at least that way we could get some feedings in for babe when necessary.

We initially wanted to try the tasting menu, however, baby was uncooperative and we wouldn’t have paid attention. Our server was very understanding and they charged us a portion of the dishes from the tasting menu that came out. We enjoyed all the pictured dishes and had zero complaints.

Finally, before tonight’s dinner, the restaurant called us and told us our original booking had to be cancelled since someone booked the entire restaurant. They made it up to us by offering the free Thai basil ice cream, which was much better than whatever ice cream joints Ossington had!

Overall, fantastic night – good vibes with baby – and great food. Highly recommend this place.

Delicious food but the ambiance and service were disappointing.
1) This is one of the few establishments where I would actually recommend doing a high chair reservation vs a dining table reservation. The dining tables are packed so closely together like sardines that it is uncomfortable. There is so little space on the table + chairs that you have to store purses behind you on a windowsill. I recommend bringing a very small purse if you do happen to make a dining room reservation.
2) Which leads me to point #2… the dining room tables are so closely packed together, that the high chair option actually gives you more space and privacy. What really ruined our dinner was there was a group of ~6 people seated a table away from us that was extremely loud. Like exorberantly and continously loud, to the point where I could not hear my friend across the table for the majority of the dinner. From the looks of it, they were served too much alcohol. There was a table next to us where the couple also agreed that they were being disruptive. I know this is not necessarily the restaurants fault, but when we addressed this with our server and asked if we could move tables, they essentially dismissed us and said that no matter where we go, that this group of people making noise would be loud. After some back and forth, she did move us to another area and it made a huge difference.
3) The server told us that our table would be reserved from 6:30pm until 8:15pm. We weren’t served our mains until 8pm, and we felt incredibly rushed to finish the food. The staff members weren’t even subtle about it either, our server grabbed my plate off the table when there were still 2 pieces of short rib left on it! I had to tell her to let it go and let me finish. Ending our night in this way really left a bad taste in my mouths and was disappointing.

Again, the food is delicious and I have no complaints about any of the dishes or drinks we had. Everything was excellent and deserving of being on the Michelin guide. However, unfortunately I will not be returning because of the atmosphere and service.

Dry red curry with duck confit, the pork chop, and the lamb chops were the highlights of the meal.

Salads were all mediocre but the eggplant salad was better…. And the tuna tartare was not good.
