We slow roast our meats to mouthwatering perfection. Whether it’s our succulent pulled pork or our slow roasted beef brisket, you’re guaranteed to come back.

We stopped in an hour before closing. Reviews were mixed. Outside and inside are shabby and inside is dirty & dusty. We were really hungry for BBQ so we stayed. Both our BBQ sandwiches were cold. Husband ordered cheese fries, it was artifical cheese. Mac n cheese tasted old. The BBQ flavor was good, just wish it was fresh. Potato salad and macaroni salad were good. Portions were good. Just wish this place would take the time to update and think of customer service. Maybe consider smaller portions to keep prices down. Instant, artificial sweet tea. Two notes on table explain price increase and not giving celery and dressings with wings would be extra. There are nicer ways of saying things. This place has a lot of potential but we left feeling put off for first time visit. Use real cheese to go with the real BBQ and warm up the meat. Clean up and update the place. Server was nice. Lady in the back was loud and yelling.

This is a continuation of my review of recent BBQ in Sussex County, Delaware, it sure was a great day, we started with lunch up in Bridgeville with the great Kiwanis Chicken BBQ. This is only a daytime weekend thing during the summer and while it’s not the only chicken stand in Sussex, I’ll tell you the sauce the blast the chicken in, provide on the side & sell by the bottle is better than crack!

Our A/C was broken, it was high 80’s so we didn’t wanna cook and needed a dinner to pick up. Fat Daddy’s BBQ was not too far out of the way so we called in our order and in 20 minutes were looking at two girls talking photos of the outside of the building. We might have parked in the frame; sorry…

Nobody was in front of us and the food was sitting on the counter with maybe three other bags. Two employees checked us out in seconds and got her a cup of ice water to go. Once in the car the ride was overwhelming full of a smoky aroma that made it hard to resist the temptation to pull over in Redden State Forest and have a picnic even on top of our chicken lunch.

A few hours later I pulled the food from the fridge sliced the ribs and (god forgive me) microwaved the food a short time to just reheat it.

We’d gotten a Rib Dinner that included a full rack, six wings and two sides. The wings come in a few different styles and I’d read about folks raving for the smoked and this was a solid choice. Their size was not huge but I’ve seen smaller too; the bark was outstanding as was the flavor.

She pronounced that the potato salad was “pretty good”. The coleslaw was only adequate.

Now the biggest thing, the ribs were very close to perfection. They had a fantastic smoky flavor, a wonderful dry rub crusty bark and the meat was not overcooked; as one took a bit, the meat was tender and yet the rest of the rib meat didn’t drop off in mushy chunks with a clean bone. This could score big points in a BBQ competition!

Lastly, the wife is into cornbread and such would get hush puppies at most other BBQ joints and she was bummed it wasn’t on the menu here…well we did get an order of the cornpone of course…it comes in a little foil wrap, we split the single order and it was the last thing I tasted. Well freaking mind blowing is all I could say at first! This might have had some kind of kisses from the smoke gods for I’ve never had a bread with such a subtle yet at the same time powerful smoky flavor was intriguing. I’m so kicking myself for not getting a much larger order!

The month before, we’d been to one of the other rib places in the area. The contrast between them is amazing.
Smokin D’z BBQ has a trendy new location with colorful outdoor picnic tables, outhouses; if it is raining yeah got little beach umbrellas, sit in the car or go home. Fat Daddy’s looks like it hasn’t changed since the 60’s but at least has a dining room & flush toilets.
SmokinD’z is open Saturday & Sunday, Fat Daddy’s is open Thursday-Sunday.
Smokin D’z & Fat Daddy’s menus speak for themselves are easy to compare and are online…
Food is subjective and a matter of taste, nothing I say will change your mind if you’ve eaten at one place and consider it the best place around, great! If you are curious and want to try something new, different, whatever, my work is done here.

Stopped here for a quick bite on our way out of Bethany Beach…..everything was amazing! The burger melted in my mouth and seasoned to perfection! I was curious to try all the sides, but ended up trying the fries and potato salad which were both amazing as well!! Highly recommend!!!!

We stop here at least once a year and it has been consistently good. The flavors are deep and meat is super tender and the fried are delicious. Service is always great – staff is super friendly!

Dont let the outside fool you. Small place but this is absolutely a must. Got Fat Daddy’s monster dinner and the chicken looked a little dry but OMG that was my favorite.
Jay did an outstanding job. It’s a back county friendly place. Lol don’t know why the wife got a salad at a BBQ

I decided to stop and eat dinner here while returning from a work trip. My server took great care of me and my order was brought to me in a timely fashion. The brisket was excellent and the pulled pork really took me by surprise. I also really enjoyed their potato salad and baked beans. The owner is quite friendly, very sociable, and made certain that the food was good and that the beer was colder. I sure wish I lived closer so I could visit again soon!!

I have put off writing this review for a while now, hoping the food would get better and it hasn’t. The service was mid at best, but I did like the vibe of the place. I wish the food tasted as good as it smelled. The brisket sandwich I ordered was dry, and the roll was hard as a brick; almost like it was microwaved. The half chicken was the same way but seasoned better. The half rack of ribs was spicy and peppery and had a good flavor, but nowhere near as tender as they should have been. I was very disappointed all the way around. The best food I got to taste from there was for a work catering three years ago. I’ve been stopping in periodically, hoping to recapture the same great food. The bbq has fallen short every time since. I really wanted to like this place because it’s hard to find great BBQ in this area. Oh well, the search continues…

We’ve been here a few times, and it’s always great! We’ve tried almost everything, and I love it all. The brisket nachos are my fave Everything’s made in-house with care, and the owners even came out to chat – super nice people. If you like BBQ, you’ll LOVE Fat Daddys!

Takeout, $15.97 for two meat platter with two sides…great value.
Easy to spot from main road.
Food ready in 10 minutes.
Great smoke flavor to brisket, wings and beans. Beans are very spicy!!! Too spicy for me to enjoy and bumped down to 4/5. I’ve never had beans this spicy in all my life.
Brisket was a little chewy. Wings were spicy as well.
Overall great flavor but too much spice IMO!

I was in Sussex County DE and on my way home when I craved for BBQ and it happens to be that this place is on my way so thought I give it a try.

Ambiance: It has the homey feeling of a family owned restaurant, small but it’s packed with food to offers. They even have desserts like milkshakes 😀

I went in there on a non-rush hour so I couldn’t judge the noise level but they don’t play any music which is good as it means you will have a nice quiet meal.

Food: I love the brisket and the sausages, but I must admit that the brisket is not that moist but still tastes good. I’m not a big fan of pulled pork but it’s a part of what I ordered so I just ate some of it.

Mac & Cheese – is ok. It’s more decent from the other restaurants I have been but I think they can improve more.

The price, comparing the serving vs the price, I say it’s a good deal.

My server is very nice and welcoming, too bad i forgot to get her name but she is sweet and knows how to handle customers.
