Reviews
The space itself: A small, clean ordering counter that is “standing room only”. There is a corner table with 2 chairs, but I’m not sure you’re meant to eat there.
The service: Courteous and timely, no complaints. When handing me my order bag, an older woman double-checked it and noticed there was a condiment dish missing, and went to the back to fetch it, which I thought was nice.
The food: I took a shot in the dark and ordered 3 things, hoping I’d like at least one. All three were delicious. Here are details:
– “Five Spiced Fried Chicken w/ Basil”: This is popcorn chicken. This dish is a GREAT VALUE, you get a deceptively large amount of chicken for the size of the dish. Chicken piece size ranged from 1″ to 2″. The chicken is coated in a sort of Cajun-like seasoning. Mine was cooked perfectly, crisp on the outside yet juicy and tender.
– “Taiwanese Pork Burger”: This is not a “burger”, so much as a sort of gyro/wrap. It’s a large cut of pork belly on something similar to a Bao bun, with a sweet peanut garnish and something similar to cabbage for texture. The glazing on the pork itself is also sweet. Recommend eating ASAP to prevent juice from saturating the bun.
– “Twice-Cooked 5 Spice Beef Shank”: This is a dish containing about half-and-half mix of green sprouts and slices of 1″ x 1-2″ beef. Deep umami taste, meat was well-cooked and the slightly fatty nature of it lent well to the dish.
I’d recommend the place. If I had to order again, I’d probably go with the Popcorn Chicken + Pork Burger, that way you get both a large volume of food AND a combination of sweet + salty.
Seriously? This is LARGE? half year ago, I buy small size. Now, I need to have large size because they cut at least more than half of what they put in small size before. Given the increased cost, that’s kinda expected. But today you tell me this is a Large size?! What an ambush when I open the bowl with excitement.
Way less chicken in popcorn chicken too!
We managed to order mostly meatless platters (surprising for a meat lover like me) but yet I was thoroughly impressed by the food – which says quite bit without a meat dish on the table! We had the string beans which were recommended to us by a friendly couple at the table next to us, who told us that the beans were a must-have. They truly were, would highly recommend the string beans – they were very flavorful and had the right texture! We also ordered sesame noodles, Taiwanese sticky rice, and pumpkin with salty egg, all of which were decently good.
When the bill came out, I was shocked – we ordered 4 plates, one for each person (though we ate family style) and the total was less than $50. We were stuffed, satisfied with the food, and it was well worth the cost. Only room for improvement would be the attentiveness of the waiters to our table (we had to ask a few times to get water refills) but that’s forgivable because of how busy the place was, and they definitely returned without asking later in the evening when the business died down.
Overall, would highly recommend the place for the great food and good deal. Would come back if I go to Bellevue again! And would take my parents, too – I bet they’d approve 🙂
Taiwanese Style Chow Mein: one of my favorites out of this list, this was popping with flavor!
Salt and Pepper shrimp: pretty big and crispy shrimp, you can eat them with the skin on
Five spiced fried chicken: this was tender and flavorful, very solid and decent for the price!
Hakka style Chow fun: lighter flavors compared to the chow Mein but still very good!
Taiwanese oyster pancake: Taiwanese classic. A glutinous pancake with oysters inside. Give it a try!
Braised pork over rice: another Taiwanese classic. I wish they gave more of the braised fatty pork!
Overall I think they have great Taiwanese selections and I will be back to try more!
