Essie’s is an elegant yet casual dining American restaurant located in the heart of the Little Italy section of Poughkeepsie, NY under the direction of Executive Chef Brandon Walker a CIA graduate from Brooklyn, NY. Chef Walker’s Modern American menu is inspired by global flavors and his family roots from the Caribbean and American South. Chef Walker uses modern cooking techniques and local seasonal ingredients when available to support the local food economy and to show case the best ingredients that the Hudson Valley offers. The Dining room pays homage to the things of old with vintage, industrial, and reclaimed wood features to create a cozy, warm and inviting environment.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Essie’s, an elegant yet casual American restaurant located in the heart of Little Italy in Poughkeepsie, NY. The dining room pays homage to the things of old with industrial and reclaimed wood features to create a cozy, warm and inviting environment. The air circulation was not what I expected, but it was manageable.
During my visit, I enjoyed the shrimp and grits which were great, but I wish I had been told that the shrimp topping had bacon in it. The cornbread was not quite what I was expecting, as it was more like a cake loaf. However, the beet nachos were the best thing on the menu, full of flavor and absolutely delicious. They were the highlight of brunch conversation, and I highly recommend trying them.
Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert, so I cannot comment on that, but the potential was definitely there with the cheesecake. The staff was diverse, professional, but also personable, which added to the overall experience.
In summary, my dining experience at Essie’s was truly enjoyable, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal in the Poughkeepsie area.

The beet nachos were delicious and refreshing. I really liked that they weren’t heavy. The chicken sandwich was juicy and tasty, and for fried chicken it was relatively light. I’m looking forward to tasting more menu options.

Everything we ate at Essie’s was delicious, including that cheesecake option for dessert Food seemed freshly made upon order which mean some wait time but no complaints here. Staff was friendly, chef stopped by to say thank you, a nice touch and reminder of why we should support small businesses. Dining room is beautiful, music volume perfect, all around amazing place for a date night dinner.

Chef Brandon has a wonderful place in Poughkeepsie. The environment inside is welcoming and decorated well. The brunch cocktails are a must! We got the grits croquettes and the texture was perfect. The crispy chicken sandwich was fried well and full of flavor. Can’t wait to come back!

Stopped here on the walk toward the Walkway Over the Hudson. Incredibly charming and the sweetest staff! Even for brunch, the bartender put in his all for our cocktails. I wasn’t able to get the Bloody Mary I wanted because the kitchen didn’t have all the ingredients for a handmade mix. You know what? Not mad about that. But now I want to try it when I come back!
Ordered the mushroom and potato frittata and the chicken sandwich. The side salad for my frittata was super sized and perfectly dressed. There was nothing left on my plate when I done. My husband had the chicken sandwich and it was that perfect crispy outside with that tender and juicy inside.
Our cocktails were so well crafted that you didn’t taste the alcohol so much as felt the giddiness later.
It was the perfect way to start our day in Poughkeepsie!

Came for brunch and had the chicken and waffles. The place is small, but doesn’t have the feel of a tight fit. Our waiter was very friendly and on top of it. I had a glass of champagne with my brunch and it was perfect. The fried chicken was the main character of this dish, well seasoned, crispy and juicy. The waffles were good but they weren’t special, and I truly wish they would have been so that the dish would have a 5/5 rating. I believe the butter was a vanilla butter and I could have gone without it.

We were looking for a place for lunch and stopped in to Essie.
We had the plantains as an appetizer and that was AMAZING.
If that was where the meal ended they would have 5 stars, but… My girlfriend and I both had a special bison burger.
The burger they have on the menu is $19 so I figured bison would be a bit more…. But it was $27!!!
And it took about 30 minutes for them to come out.
It was dry and not flavorful at all.
I added cedar cheese which brought my burger to $29.
So 2 burgers and an appetizer turned into a $75 lunch.
I can’t vouch for how other menu items are but this was very extreme, a great app followed by at best a mediocre and EXTREMELY overpriced burger.
So I started with 5 stars, took 1 off for the long wait when it was not busy, 1 star off for a rip-off price for a burger which as a house special, if it’s that crazy priced they should tell you, and the 3rd star for the burger being tasteless and mediocre.

fantastic find… surprisingly unconventional starters that really shine (ie. beet nachos and grits croquettes) and fantastic entries that were cooked to perfection (remembering fondly the osso buco, chicken, cod and duck). talking to chef walker after was a treat all by itself…
(part 2)… years after the first visit did not disappoint. we have been wanting to come back post-pandemic. everything was fantastic… those grit croquettes, tho… yum. and once again chef walker stopped by to check in… he is a true inspiration and joy to talk to
