If you’re looking for great food, head to Ernie’s Coffee Shop — it’s so much more than just coffee. The original Ernie’s atmosphere is still alive, with great music and a warm, welcoming vibe. The owner prepares the food right in the back kitchen, and you can taste the care that goes into every dish.

It’s also a fun spot for a drink — the spiced apple margarita is a treat all on its own. The Ernie’s Burger and the Chicken Burger with the special sauce are both delicious and won’t disappoint. I also spotted the beet salad, and it looked amazing.

Maria serves everything with her sweet smile, making the experience even better. I love bringing my friends here — we always have a great time catching up.

Ernie’s is hands-down the best food in Sault Ste. Marie — no contest. The steak and fries? Unreal. Always cooked to perfection, always priced right. Do yourself a favour and order the shrimp toast too.

The rotating seasonal menu keeps things fresh, and every new dish is a home run. Honestly, every time I drive past, I have to fight the urge to pull over and run inside for the best meal in town.

Johnny and his team are absolute gems, and we’re lucky to have a spot like this in the Sault.

Do. Not. Miss. This. Place.

Ernie’s means something to the city. Its packed, all the time.

SSM has tons of good italian food, but Ernie’s fills an otherwise big void of interesting and creative pub food. No one else in the sault can really do what they do.

I’ve liked everything I’ve eaten here. The Caesar salad in particular is the best Ive ever had. The shrimp toast and chicken sandwich are two of my other personal favorites. Their pastas leave a little bit on the table, but thats not why youre coming here.

Try to call ahead for a reservation – especially on the weekend. When you show up, you’ll find a place with a cozy, approachable vibe with welcoming and attentive staff.

During our stay we stumbled across this little cafe near our hotel. Wow. Great vibe and absolutely delicious food. You may need to wait awhile for your food but it well worth the wait. It was so busy we had to eat at the bar. Recommend getting reservations on the weekend. The chicken supreme was absolutely delicious and Caesar salad the best we have ever had. My husband really enjoyed the Mary’s Blue Chicken sandwich. Will definitely be back.

We had our Christmas team dinner at Ernie’s Cafe, and it was truly exceptional. We enjoyed a family-style meal with the chef’s choice menu, and every course was better than the last.

We started with an incredible spread of cheeses, meats, smoked salmon, olives, pickles, and fresh bread. Then came a series of delicious appetizers — the shrimp toast was a standout. For the main course, we shared chicken, steak, fries, and salad, all cooked and seasoned perfectly. The evening was finished with a delightful dessert that wrapped up the meal beautifully.

Thank you, John and the entire team, for an unforgettable evening and truly memorable dining experience.

John and his team deliver exceptional food and a genuinely welcoming experience at ERNIE’s. This classic throwback diner nails the nostalgia, with thoughtful touches like the Wintario ticket wall in the adjacent seating area — a fun tribute to the Soo’s lottery roots. While it’s comfort food at heart, the ever-changing nightly menu keeps things fresh, often featuring surprisingly refined, chef-driven dishes that showcase real creativity and skill. It’s the kind of place where you can grab a favourite classic or try something truly special. ERNIE’s has easily become my favourite place to dine in town. Bravo!

John continues to make Ernie’s the go to place for local, seasonal and exceptional cooking. He will give you some traditional options but focus on his changing menu. It could be fresh fish, lamb or a beef specialty- but it will always be top notch.

Hard not to be filled up with a soup, salad or appetizer and miss dessert. But you have to fit in the Spanish cheesecake which is a classic and always on.

Note: some of the pics are from a birthday dinner I had there – so dishes were family style. I literally told him to surprise me and feed 14. He made oysters Rockefeller which were out of this world. All my out of town guests were blown away – and still talk about it.

Stopped here on our way to Batchawana Bay and had a great time! Such a cute spot, staff is really nice, our cocktails were delicious and the food was super tasty! The shrimp toast and the asparagus special were are favorites of the meal, but everything was great. The portions were pretty big for us and we unfortunately didn’t have room for dessert but took the rest of the food with us and it was a nice snack later on :). We’ll definitely be back if we head through Saul St. Marie again.

Very good food. Expensive. Seating is not great. Overflow room is an old, run down building with terrible heating. Servers were very pleasant – a nice change in a grumpy city. Vodka gnocchi had great flavor, but was very spicy. Caesar salad was OK. Lots of stuff on it, but not a great Caesar in my opinion. The two full strips of bacon on top of the salad however were sublime.

Im really disappointed with my experience here tonight. This has been one of my favourite restaurants for a long time, and I’ve given it a lot of repeat business, which is why this was especially frustrating. We made a reservation a week or so ago for New Years Eve!

We had a reservation that was confirmed a couple of days ago, and then confirmed again online today. When we arrived, we were told the reservation had been canceled — even though we did not cancel it on our end. The hostess told us there was nothing she could do and offered no solution other than sitting at the bar.

Another server said she would check on the situation, but never came back, and we were left sitting there with no follow-up. Eventually, we felt ignored and decided to leave.

Mistakes happen, but the lack of accountability or effort to resolve the issue was disappointing and felt like poor customer service. I expected better from a restaurant I’ve always enjoyed and supported.
