First of all, I would like to clarify that our family is Thai, traveling around the world as a hobby, and we run our business in Thailand. We are not Thai people working abroad.
We have traveled to many European countries, including the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and Hungary. We have enjoyed both local cuisine and Thai food throughout Europe, and we have always had positive experiences — until this incident.
At Erawan Prague, however, we experienced extremely poor service that was beyond acceptable and left us feeling that we do not want to visit Prague again. From my personal perspective, this experience felt like discrimination. Readers may interpret it as they wish.
During our Europe trip in 2025–2026, after traveling for over a week, our family missed Thai food and decided to have dinner at Erawan Prague.
We entered the restaurant and asked for a table for five people. The staff member in charge (an older order-taking staff) told us there were no available seats, despite the fact that there was a table without a reservation sign with four empty seats and enough space to add one more chair. A nearby table was also paying the bill, which meant seating would clearly be available soon. The staff member simply waved his hand dismissively and gave no explanation.
Because my mother really wanted Thai food, we waited until a table for six people became available. After being seated, the staff insisted that we move to a hidden high table at the back, even though we had a child with us (height under 130 cm). We insisted on sitting at a regular table.
This is where the negative experience began.
1. After we sat at the regular table, the staff showed visible irritation toward us. When handing us the menus, he threw four menus onto the table instead of placing them politely. He then walked into the kitchen, loudly slamming dishes and plates, which other customers could clearly hear.
2. We chose to remain patient and ordered:
• Pad Kra Pao
• Jasmine rice
• Fried rice with shrimp
• Tom Yum Goong
• Chicken satay
We received two servings of jasmine rice instead of one. When we asked for spoons, we were given only one spoon for five people, forcing us to eat Thai food with knives and forks.
3. After finishing the meal, we requested the bill and noticed an error. We ordered one jasmine rice, were served two (which we accepted), but were charged for three. I tried to explain this, but the staff showed annoyance and insisted on charging for three. Since the difference was only 70 CZK, I let it go to avoid further conflict.
4. This final incident is unacceptable and the main reason for this review.
After paying the bill and preparing to leave, the same staff member came to our table and knocked on it with the spine of the menu. He pointed to a used napkin near the plate and said:
“You cannot behave here the same way you do in Thailand. This is a developed country, and people don’t do that here.”
He then demanded that we return to the table and place the napkin on the plate ourselves. After payment, there was no thank you, unlike what was said to other tables.
I have traveled extensively around the world and have never experienced anything like this. From my perspective, this was discriminatory behavior toward Thai customers in a Thai restaurant, which is completely unacceptable.
I hope the restaurant will take this matter seriously. The restaurant has CCTV cameras that can be reviewed to verify what happened. We expect a sincere apology and proper handling of this incident.
PS.Thai Staff so nice and food is ok.
When we mentioned that we had a reservation request pending, he silently pointed us to a table without any explanation or greeting. Given that the restaurant was far from full, with only two other tables occupied during our visit, seating us was clearly not an issue.
The food itself was good, which makes the experience even more disappointing. Unfortunately, the tense and uncomfortable atmosphere created by this waiter affected everyone, not just us. It felt unfair to the kitchen team.
While still seated, we ended up making a reservation at another Thai restaurant and left immediately after finishing. Good food alone cannot make up for unfriendly and unsettling service.
The curry was very watery for me, but the meat with green beans was delicious.
The restaurant was nicely decorated, we were the only one since it was still early. “Greeted” by a male server who doesn’t speak much nor showed any hospitality towards us. Took our order and disappeared somewhere, another customer stepped in and waited for a long while and then left. I think it was the same server as other reviews has shared, so service is not there.
As for food, we ordered the standard chicken satay, possibly the worse looking one we ever had! 2 big pieces of chicken breast on stick, slightly grilled. A lot of chicken but nothing close to what satay should look.
We also ordered the tom yum shrimps soup, it was ok.
For main course we ordered the red curry with duck and the chef special – roasted pork belly with garlic, oyster source and pak choy, since we want some Asian green in our diet. The duck was not in big piece but was like pulled duck meat and was a little chewy, curry was a bit too watery than usual. The roasted pork belly was tough and the oak choy was served cut into pieces and mixed with carrots, not the way a pak choy dish as one expected.
Overall, good atmosphere and nicely decorated, but food and service were not up to par.
However, the service was very disappointing. The male waiter, who appeared to be older, showed no service mind at all.
From the moment we entered the restaurant, he told us there were no available tables, even though there were clearly empty tables and only an extra chair was needed. His attitude made it seem as though he did not want to serve Thai customers in a Thai restaurant.
He then placed the menus down very forcefully, almost as if he was throwing them at us. The food that was served did not match what we had ordered.
We asked for five spoons since there were five of us, but only one spoon was brought. Thai food requires both a spoon and a fork—otherwise, it is very difficult to eat rice properly.
After we paid the bill and were about to leave, this waiter told us to go back and remove the used tissues from the plate, saying, “We don’t do that here,” while giving us a very condescending look.
There was no “thank you” at all.
His behavior showed a complete lack of service mind. He was rude, impolite, and highly unprofessional—especially for a Thai restaurant.
I have traveled to many countries and have never experienced anything like this, not even in Western restaurants.
I sincerely hope the restaurant will take this feedback into consideration and improve their service for the benefit of their business.
Arrived around 1930ish on Tue evening, not too busy. Vicinity of the old town square.
Great for those who miss asian food and some spicy.
I don’t remember his name but the waiter who served us was the highlight.
And if you don’t like spicy, make sure to mention if they can make less spicy. Ok general the cuisine is composed by the spicies but they can always bring you coconut milk to soothe the tongue
Lovely food and wine recommendation
