Stepping into Embers, I was met with a comfortable, laid-back vibe and the pleasant hint of cooking smoke in the air. As a solo diner, it was an easy place to settle in; the crowd was mostly quiet groups, and the service was prompt and attentive right from the start.
I went with a classic steak dinner: a 9oz sirloin, a loaded baked potato, and an upgraded side of jalapeño mac and cheese. The service remained a high point throughout the meal, with my server checking in regularly.
Unfortunately, the food itself was a mixed bag. The steak looked great with a heavy char, but it was tougher than I’d hoped, and the “wood-fired” flavor was more subtle than expected. The jalapeño mac was a bit of a letdown, lacking in cheese and probably not worth the upcharge. The surprise star of the plate was actually the baked potato, which was cooked perfectly and had a genuine, light smoke flavor.
The final bill came to $27 before tip. Overall, I’m glad I tried Ember. It’s a perfectly pleasant spot with great service and a nice, quiet atmosphere. While the meal had its highlights, the main course didn’t quite deliver on its promise. It was an ok experience, just not my favorite.
And it did not disappoint at all.
Everything was world class.
The food was delicious , perfectly cooked, right temperature and served promptly. If the food was great, the service was absolutely stellar. We had Ashley as our server and as someone who worked over 25 years in hospitality industry I can confirm that this was absolutely the best service I’ve had in a restaurant in a very, very long time. She’s a great server.
I highly recommend this restaurant. You wont be disappointed.
Drove up 12:00 noon to an empty parking lot filled with broken glass and trash. Went in anyway hopeful.
ordered CFS and it arrive presentation ready, but tried to cut it and was so tough I left it……..shoe leather covered in gravy.
Partner ordered a hamburger, presentation perfect, meat good quality, bun slightly stale.
After our meal we drove around to see the lot construction / obstruction but could not find one.
We’ll give them one more shot but will do some research before we go
The relaxed atmosphere has been one of the main reasons I still enjoy Embers. It’s quiet enough that you can have a conversation over dinner or drinks, and the staff, including management, have always been top-notch, always being attentive, prompt, and friendly.
Embers was also my first choice for happy hour for the longest time, again visiting weekly for quite a few years. The bar staff always took good care of us.
I’m an admitted beer lover, and enjoying a few at the bar or with one of their nice steaks was another key reason I loved being there.
So, my only disappointment in recent months has been with the quality of the draft beer being served. Despite the bartenders always trying to make it right, I have noticed that the beers have been consistently served flat. A few times it was mentioned that it was being looked into, but unfortunately I had the same experience on following visits. I hope this gets resolved soon.
Despite my last comment regarding the beer, and the fact that I rarely do reviews, I felt it was long overdue in letting the Embers crew know how much I appreciate their establishment.
As far as I’m concerned, and from the very first time I walked into Embers, I could tell that they paid attention to all those details that may not be obvious to some, but in the end make for a really nice experience. In my opinion, Embers continues to be a unique place in San Antonio. Wishing them continued success!
The atmosphere was lovely. We could talk without yelling and check the score, too. Plus, a fantastic waitress—I wish I remembered her name! Wonderful!!
Best dinner out in ages. Thank you, Embers!
