If you’re a fan of authentic Dominican cuisine, Elsa la Reina del Chicharrón is a must-visit spot in the bustling Dyckman neighborhood of NYC. This unassuming restaurant is known for its pork rinds and fried plantains, and let me tell you, they are some of the best I’ve ever had.

Great, unassuming place for authentic Dominican food. The portions are very large and well priced. I had the chicharron and mofongo and they were both delicious.

So, a friend bought me white rice, beans, baked chicken and sweet plantains (maduros) and everything but the rice was AWFUL The chicken was undercooked, the beans barely tasted like anything and the plantains were in a POOL OF OIL (I kid you not!) I’m not trying to be mean, just honest. Maybe we were just unlucky because this place seems to be rated well but my experience was terrible. I will not recommend to a friend or eat from here again. Thank you.

Massive, delicious portion of Pernil w/arroz con gandules (braised pork shoulder with a side of yellow rice and pigeon peas) and the local staple, chicharron (fried pork belly on the bone)!

Ordered mofongo con chicharrones, which was huge, filling, and super tasty. It came with a nice, warm red sauce on the side that wasn’t very spicy. Fair warning, I tried to order via the special’s name on the menu (mofongo a la reina) but the lady behind the counter had no idea what I was referring to, so probably just best to describe what you want, in Spanish.

This is the third and last time I’ll be going to Elsa. The quality of their chicharon has deteriorated to the level of Bodega. The price has increased dramatically . See ya Elsa…
