The cheese curds were good. They were cooked perfectly and were crunchy on the outside. We both ordered the Friday fish fry. We ordered the fried haddock. Both came with salad and soup. We were definitely asking each other why we ordered the cheese curds too.
My husband had the salad and I had vegetable beef soup. The greens for the salad were very fresh and crunchy. They weren’t wilted or discolored. The toppings were all very fresh too. He enjoyed his salad. The vegetable beef soup was also good.
After we finished the salad and soup the waitress brought out our cheese curds. After we finished the cheese curds she brought out our haddock. The haddock fillets had good flavor. They did not taste fishy, they were white, and flaky. The breading had a lot of flavor and it was very crunchy. My only complaint about the entire meal was the size of the potato. It was about the size of my fist.
It seems like a place with a nice view and good drinks. Don’t try to eat here. I had multiple better experiences in town.
Our family of 6 stopped by Elk & Hound for dinner on July 1, 2022. The visit started great, we liked the place and the decor and the view. Our waitress was very friendly and recommended entrees from their Fri Fish Fry night menu. Appetizers were great and delicious and set high expectations for the entrees. However, the recommended entrees were mostly disappointing 🙁 The only good one was Crab Topped Haddock. Poor Man’s Lobster (backed haddock) had some specific not too good taste. And it was specifically recommended to us as “no fishy taste”. Unfortunately, we ordered two of these. Grilled Whitefish would be good if not over salted and hence having its taste dulled.
Hungarian mushroom soup was pretty tasteless and felt like from a can rather than fresh mushroom soup.
Perhaps we would be better off ordering some pizza or steak but we got from Fri Fish Fry menu wasn’t good except Crab Topped Haddock.
Appetizers:
Elk & Hound Combo – excellent
Hungarian mushroom soup – skip
Mains:
Crab Topped Haddock – great
Poor Man’s Lobster – avoid
Grilled whitefish – would be very good if not ruined by too much salt.
Drinks:
Bloody Mary – great
And at the end we find a drink that we never ordered on our check. It was a few $ and I just paid it so not wait for new check as we were all tired by that time. But it left unpleasant feeling.
So, we have a quite mixed feeling about this restaurant. If I were in the area I would give it another try ordering different dishes but can’t really recommend it.
When we arrived (4 people) the dining room was empty and there was a small party in the back. We waited about 5-10 minutes to be seated.
Our waitress was very rude and disrespectful. We asked what the special was she said she didn’t know, we asked what the soup was and she didn’t know, we asked for a drink menu and she rolled her eyes and brought one over. (Not sure the name of this waitress but she was in her thirties, dark hair and glasses)
For appetizers we ordered cheese curds and nachos. When we got our appetizers they brought out the taco salad instead of the nachos, which was fine we still ate it. Both were good.
We waited over an hour for our food…
A table of two and a table of one came in after us. They ordered after we did.
After the other two tables had been served we asked our waitress how much longer until our food would be out. She told us smaller tables get served first because it doesn’t take as long. Both tables had burgers. Our table ordered 2 salads, whitefish with vegetables, and risotto.
The other two tables had now finished eating and left and we still haven’t gotten our food. Once again we asked our waitress how much longer “it’ll be a few more minutes” so we asked if there was a time frame and she said “no it’ll be a few more minutes” and she told us it was taking a long time because of the party. She said this all with a lot of attitude.
When our food finally came out the hot dishes were cold and the portions were small. I wish we would’ve taken pictures of our food, it did not look like what’s posted online.
We told the manager all of this and he said we had “the perfect storm of problems” and apologized. He took 30% off our bill. Even with the discount we still paid around $100 for all 4 meals.
There was a German shepherd in the restaurant. The dog had no service animal vest on or anything like that. There was a sign that said no animals.
Our waitress never did return to our table, we had to ask a different waitress to get our bill. The manager once again returned to our table to apologize and collect our bills. We we left our waitress was just standing there smirking.
If you cannot keep up with the dining room being open and having a party at the same time you should just close down when you’re having a party. If the food is going to take that long you need to tell your customers, and having animals in the restaurant is against food laws.
We left disappointed and hungry. Overall this was a terrible experience. I would never come back here or recommend it to anyone.
The food was very good.
