Been coming here for a few years now and El Viejo rose quickly to my top favorite place of all time. I normally get a standard order: loroco pupusa, bean and cheese pupusa, tamale de elote FRIED (you have to try it fried they are famous for it), and an iced horchata. But if I arrive and can smell the carne asada smoke flavors billowing from the outside, I legit can’t leave without that. The fritanga carne asada. The plantain chips that come on the side, especially in the meal I photographed and enjoyed shown, were so delicious they had this slightly smoked flavor to it omg I almost went crazy.

El Viejo will be Michelin Bib Gourmand one day. I know others agree. Felt it the first time I ate the food. For real, if it’s one language that is fluently spoken at this place, it’s food. It can get busy in there too, but the owners and staff are very kind and I always enjoy seeing them. But if you gushingly speak the language of food they will always smile at you.

Ps. We should all spam Action Bronson or Matty Matheson to show up at El Viejo. I believe they should try the food. So, Action or Matty, if you’re seeing this, it’s destined. 888

We loved it! My fiance and I went during a Saturday AM with their collab with La Finca (another local business in Maryland.) The shop was incredible, great atmosphere, tons of local support. We got the tamal de elote and taquitos tostados. We will def be going back! Thank you guys!

I ordered the Baleada and Pupusas to go. The food was delicious. I really liked the curtido and salsa roja with the pupusas since it added great flavor. Also, with the baleada the tortilla with beans and egg tasted super fresh.

Additionally, the inside has a great atmosphere and the interior design makes it feel relaxing and cozy.

This was a tough review for me to write. The food is truly amazing. On its own, it easily deserves five stars. Come hungry, order, enjoy, and leave satisfied.

Unfortunately, the service has been disappointing. I visited twice to be fair. The first time, the person at the register was unhelpful and seemed annoyed. The second time, the staff member appeared uninterested and bothered. I am not expecting Michelin-level service, but I do believe that any customer-facing business should offer a basic level of respect and a welcoming attitude.

Because of the service, I am giving this three stars. That said, if your priority is excellent Central American food, this place delivers. The tamal de elote frito is one of the best I have ever had. The desayuno típico really hits the spot, and the coffee and hot chocolate from the carafe are authentic and delicious.

It’s like waking into your favorite friend or relatives kitchen that can cook any and everything and you know it will be amazing. The pupusa’s were a literal mouth hug, the accompanying sauces and sides were bright, flavorful and the right amount seasonings/spice. I will be back to try more items on the menu.

We’re here from NYC and staying close by for a wedding. We don’t really know the area and Googled “diner” and this joint came up. Was honestly blown away by how delicious the food was. We got some baleadas, pupusas, and tamales. It was so good we ordered some more baleadas to bring back to our friends. I meant to take photos but my food was so tasty that after the first bite I went into a trance and forgot the outside world existed, so have a photo of the baleadas we brought back.

HIGHLY recommend you stop by, go out of your way, do what you can to get some delicious, authentic Central American cuisine! First, the staff is so kind and helpful and the prices are very good for the quality and the portions. Second – the food is GREAT. I got 2 pupusas de queso con loroco and the fritanga nicaragüense with pollo asado and my eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach. The food came out quickly, I ordered right in store and had to take it to go, but it was still fresh at home. Pupusas: 10/10 for me, and the best I’ve had recently. The fritanga was a solid portion, I ended up sharing cause I couldn’t finish it after eating the pupusas. But, it was so good and flavorful with the toppings you’re given and I would 100% order it again. I also had a chia con limón to drink and that was a perfect refreshing addition. You won’t regret supporting this local business!

We were so excited to find this gem! The food was delicious, and fast and affordable. But the best part was the person working. He answered a bunch of questions we had, was accommodating, and super-friendly.

I had a freso de chan – which is a strawberry limeade with chia seeds. SOOOOOO good!
