Top five Mexican restaurants in southern Michigan!!
Great value, great service, and great food make this one not to miss!! Excellent tacos and tamales! Highly recommended.
The staff is very friendly and service was very good. I got take out and the wait was about 10 minutes even with a busy lobby. The prices are good, reasonable and comparable to similar restaurants. The portions are big, a lot of meat in the taco and the tamales. I have made this a regular stop when I’m in the area.
Also a huge bonus, they accept Apple Pay.
Update:
The chorizo taco is amazing, bold flavor, The carnitas taco was delicious, Barbacoa taco was amazing, and the Al pastor was great. Both the red and green salsas are really awesome. I really liked the red but it’s way to hot for me, the green was delicious and just the right amount of heat.
The pork tamales are amazing as well!

I experienced El Sol Azteca today, as my tastebuds craved Mexican food. Very delicious spot in Saint Joseph, Michigan. I had the whole restaurant to myself, so I sat and myself at home. Just to note, there’s an 18% dine in tip added to your bill if you decide to eat at the restaurant. But I had a lovely experience.
The food was succulent! My plate came out hot and straight from the flattop or grill. I had my favorite Mexican dish in the world, Birrias! The shell was crunchy and flavorful, the dip was dip-tastic, and I enjoyed every piece of meat that fell on my plate. I also had the flavorful Mexican corn and tried the fabulous nachos! I appreciated the complimentary chips and salsa, but if I’m honest, the rice and beans that came with the birrias platter fell flat.
The service was appreciated and great! We were greeted with love, and the menu was explained great! The server was amazing and made sure we were comfortable.
The atmosphere was a little dark and flat. However, there appears to be some action going on at night at this restaurant, as there was a DJ Booth, Barbie picture setup, sombrero hats, and more to enjoy! I believe the time I came in was not a hot time slot.
All in all, there were some really GOOD stuff at El Sol Azteca and some things that could be better. I’m grateful for this lovely restaurant!

Staff was very confused when they finally came from the back about who was picking up who needed to order and so on even after we told them. Ordered when back in 20 minutes later and swear they just started my ordered because I stood there and waited another 15 minutes for my food which mine and my roommates ordered were both wrong she ordered steak got chicken. Food very bland and not very flavorful at all. Staff and atmosphere just seemed off and cold

I am so happy that we stopped and ate here!! Absolutely wonderful place, amazing food and huge menu! And the server was AWESOME!!! I will definitely be back, there’s alot on the menu to check out! Plus, the night life is amazing with live music

The food is authentic and well made. However, you can expect to pay a large price for a large portion: the dish I ordered was easily enough to feed two people and cost about 16 dollars. I would advise against ordering the queso dip and other a la carte items: the dip cost me $9 by itself for a small portion and I’m sure the other items are similarly ratioed. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed, it isn’t usually too busy there.

Wasn’t very good. Had to go to register to order, go to register to get refills go to register to get more napkins, and to get bill and pay. And then when you pay, they automatically tack on 18% for a tip. Doesn’t give you the option. What exactly happened where a tip was deserved? You brought a plate. Big deal. Didn’t do anything else unless i got up and walked over to the register.
HOWEVER, they got the biggest jack and rum portion I’ve ever seen, and for $10? Holy cow. That was like a 20 oz cup!

The service was great! The traditional pork carnitas were really good. The pepper & cheese tamales were very good! It had the perfect amount of heat and flavor. Lived the homemade hot sauce. We will definitely be back.

Amazing! One of the best Mexican restaurants I have dined at in this county. Was our first time there so we ordered a few different platters. And every single one of them was all we expected and more. Worth the money. And healthy portions. Love love love it.
