El Rodeo I stumbled across this Mexican restaurant and it turned out to be one of my faves I have no complaints every time I go the staff is super friendly I love the way they have the restaurant decorated it’s a really nice atmosphere and very clean the food is so good and I always leave with leftover is the servings are very large

I’ve been going to the various El Rodeo branches since I was a child over 30 years ago and went to the original Chapel Hill location. I went on an elementary school field trip and tried one of the teacher’s mole poblano and it blew my mind.
Throughout high school and college and then whenever I would visit my family in NC I would make sure to go to the branch across University Drive from South Square Mall, the one in downtown Durham, and (more recently) the one on Westgate Drive. I always either get Tacos a la Diabla (steak and slightly spicy chorizo tacos), mole poblano, or shrimp cocktail. It has been remarkably consistent over the years—until now.
Coming to Chapel Hill for a week to visit family I was bummed to find out the Westgate location had closed and the only one left was a 25 minute drive from my parents house in north Durham close to where Duke St intersects with Roxboro road. We got enchiladas chipotle (horrible), tacos a la Diablo (mine— pretty good but so much drier than usual), and quesadillas (not great). It was kind of a depressing experience.
Along with Neo China and Tandoor Indian Restaurant, El Rodeo is one of the restaurants that introduced me to international cuisine and I’ll always love it. There are many Mexican spots in the area that are much more authentic (including at least three close to this location on Roxboro Rd). Still, El Rodeo held a special place for me.
In short, this takeout meal was not pleasant and I doubt I’ll go out of my way to go unless for some reason I am already in north Durham while visiting family.

Food wasn’t great. Salsa and chips were good but after asking for a refill on chips it didn’t show up till our food was arrive. Server was friendly but service wasn’t anything to brag about. All in it was an OK spot with a pretty large menu to choose from.

El Rodeo is clean, spacious, and still manages to feel intimate and welcoming. The décor is tasteful, and the overall atmosphere is relaxed, perfect for a casual meal or a small family gathering. The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The chips and salsa were fresh and delicious; definitely a standout! I’d happily come back and bring more of my family with me next time. 10/10 Recommend (Pictures of meal attached: Chimichangas and Grande Specia)

I will not be returning to this restaurant after the way they treated me. If you waitress and manager both was rude. I receive the wrong order. I did not realize that I received the wrong order until after I started eating. It was a big burrito I’ll order steak burrito but they gave me chicken once I realized that I had the wrong burrito I brought it to the waitress attention and she got a attitude and said it to me Im just now realizing it after eating keep in mind it’s a huge burrito. So the manager came over and had an attitude as well. And was going to charge me for another burrito. I was so upset I just told them to bring back the chicken burrito. I wasn’t rude all I asked for what I ordered. They are rude people

I do not want to write this review as this place has been a go to of mine for several years. I have noticed the usual price increase as that’s becoming the norm everywhere however the food has declined recently. Today I went for lunch and was seated at a table that had not been cleared with 3 clean tables around this one. This is an easy fix however the roach that ran under the table is not something I am willing to look beyond. I hope the management corrects some of these issues quickly.

The food is B- at best. The price seem ok but then they tack on hidden charges.
I attempted to order take carry out. I ordered fajita nachos $13.99, small queso 5.50, and small side of rice. $3.50 with tax comes to $24.73.
They said my bill would be 27.98. They added $1 for carryout, $1.00 for “service fee”, $1.00 for paying with credit card and then .25 cents for my to-go container. The only charge that is mentioned anywhere is the .25 cents for carryout container. It is on their menu.

Portions are big, fair priced food. The waiter was a bit stressed, and took a long time to get our drinks, but over all the food was good. The waiting time was about 25 minutes after we ordered and the chips were almost stale but again I did enjoy the food.

I use to go to this restaurant quite often but the food and service is getting worse and worse. I 10/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND eating here!
I believe a safety inspection is needed for properly handling and storing food at this restaurant!
There was a bug in my salad, so I called our waitress over. She took the plate quickly and came back with a new plate. She said the manager said it was just a piece of old lettuce- IT WAS NOT. I have witnesses that it was a bug. The manager never came over and apologized or anything. So o called the manager over and let him know about the bug. I informed him that I could no longer eat the food because I was so grossed out. He shrugged his shoulders, took the food, and said okay. That’s enough to show that the MANAGER does not even care what’s being served at his restaurant. I’m telling you all- it was the WORSE experience ever.
