It’s so nice to get a little dish of queso along with salsa and chips to start with! We were there for lunch – they have an extensive menu. We had a chicken enchilada and chimichanga, both of which were tasty. The frozen margarita was very good, too.
UPDATE: definitely 5 stars today. I couldn’t stop eating the chips and salsa, and my crispy chicken taco and side of rice were so tasty. Best of all, shout-out to our lovely server Alma! So nice being your patrons.

This is a good place to go with your family. They do have great service. Food was good. I think it was kind of priced a little pricey. It was pretty packed but not a long wait. they went over and beyond and cleaned our toddlers utensils we brought in. They also gave us free cheese dip so I recommend you checking this place out if you’re in Lawrence, Kansas, I think they have other places around the city.

My aunt visited from Florida and we came here after my brothers award ceremony. My aunt from Florida mentioned how the portions here are so much larger than in Florida. We all enjoyed the food and the service was great.

I want to eat here anytime we are in Lawrence. The fried tacos are a favorite and the fajitas are very filling. The borracho beans are delicious. Fast, friendly service.

We used to come here regularly for years until a disappointing experience a few years ago with rude service and bland food. We decided to give it another try today for lunch, and unfortunately it was even worse. Our waitress seemed irritated the entire time, and while the portions were large, the food was still very bland. The Taco Salad had more rice and beans than lettuce, with barely any sour cream or guac. We weren’t offered refills on chips or drinks and had to ask.
As we were leaving, we asked the hostess to break a $5 bill into quarters so my son could use the toy machines by their entrance that only accept quarters. She looked confused and didn’t say anything, then a group of guests came in the door, and she turned her attention to seating them without communicating anything to us. We waited about 5 minutes for her to return, and asked again for quarters. She again looked confused, took the $5 bill and walked away without saying anything, then returned a few minutes later with five $1 bills. When I stated again that we had asked for quarters, she shrugged, but again did not say anything. I said “You don’t have any quarters today?” She said “no” and walked away.
I’ve been in customer service for over 20 years and understand that not every establishment will have perfect service, but literally not communicating with customers and downright ignoring them is never okay. If she was too busy to help, or confused about what we needed, there were plenty of other staff members nearby that she could have asked to help us. Between that and the meh food, we definitely will not be back.

I really can’t say why this place gets the ratings it does. I think it might be because they give you free queso and chips and salsa and the drink and meal portions are large, and that’s all that us overweight americans seem to care about. The food was just greasy flavorless mush with no soul whatsoever that could have come straight out of the microwave. Really disappointing. The wait staff however were great. Friendly and attentive.

I had an amazing experience at El Potro Mexican Cafe! The restaurant’s location in a separate building surrounded by a shopping mall is fantastic, and the ample parking made it convenient. Sitting outside was a delight, and the interior design truly transported me to Mexico. The service was fast and attentive, and the extensive menu offered a wide variety of choices. The flavors were excellent, and each dish was presented in a traditional Mexican style that added to the overall experience. The spicy margaritas we ordered were a hit – not every restaurant offers them, which was a pleasant surprise. Despite the generous portions, the prices were very reasonable. El Potro Mexican Cafe definitely deserves five stars for its ambiance, flavors, drinks, and value for money!

This breaks my heart to have to write this review because we have ALWAYS loved ElPotro! The first time we ate there we had lunch, it was so good, we went back for dinner! But I ordered for a drive thru pickup tonight, like I usually do, and was extremely disappointed when I got home! I will post photos of what was ordered and what was received! And it was all cold! The queso was cold and in a smaller container for same price! Flautas were $13+ with nothing else, no rice or beans! Tacos were NOT fried, soft tacos were a mess! This is our most favorite place to eat, we eat there at least once a week and it’s always amazing! This was not! This was for the LIBERTY LOCATION NOT LAWRENCE!

Awesome food, fantastic service and nice atmosphere. Our server Alejandro was super kind and he helped us a lot. It’s also a family friendly place. I ordered El Texan and it was delicious, very stuffing. I’m looking forward to come here again
