I have come to El Maguey several times and every time I am delighted by the excellent Mexican food. This was the first time I came for an early lunch, 11a, and having skipped breakfast, I wanted something with eggs. We started with chips and guac, which are so tasty. Then we both ordered Chilaquiles. I followed the recommendation of my friend in getting both red and green sauces and fried eggs over medium. The chips were not soggy, but just perfect. And the meat was medium rare, exactly how I like it. Now I know that both the dinner and lunch menus are dialed in and the food is always good.
Also, El Maguey is always a pleasant experience because the staff is so friendly, and attentive to checking in and keeping drinks refilled. Can’t wait to come again.

The outdoor seating is very nice. It is more of an indoor space with huge windows. The salsa served with chips was too spicy for me but the rest of my family enjoyed it. The hostess was quick to seat us, get us drinks and offered us chips and Guacamole. She offered it like, “chips, salsa, guacamole?” Like it was complimentary, but laster charged us. I decided not to make a fuss because it was so good and was $8.98. The waitress took a while to come and take our order. Also my daughter ordered breakfast, machaca that the menu states comes with potatoes. It was served with rice and beans. The waitress says that they have changed it, but have not changed the menu yet, something she should have said to us when ordering. But was quick to bring us a small side of potatoes too.
The food was excellent, and I will still come back.

This review is long overdue. I’ve visited this restaurant multiple times, and each experience has been consistently impressive. The service is exceptional; the staff is always attentive, frequently checking in to ensure that everything is to my liking and offering helpful recommendations from their extensive menu. While chips and salsa are complimentary, the guacamole, though extra, is definitely worth the price—it’s fresh, flavorful, and a perfect complement to their slightly spicy salsa.

Every dish I’ve tried has been great, with no complaints so far. However, I would suggest skipping the *Camarones à la Diabla* if you’re expecting something particularly spicy, as I found it to be a bit sweeter than anticipated, though it still carries great flavor. On the other hand, the *Chilaquiles* are a standout; the chips retain a satisfying crispness and are not overly soggy, which I greatly appreciate. The meat is tender and well-cooked, adding to the dish’s overall quality.

Another favorite of mine is the Bistek with Ranchero sauce—absolutely delicious, and I highly recommend it with a side of sliced avocado and sour cream, though that’s my personal preference. The restaurant maintains a clean and welcoming atmosphere, with spotless restrooms and dining areas.

While it may be slightly on the pricier side, the food quality justifies the cost. Additionally, the menu offers a variety of gluten-free and vegetarian options, making it a great choice for those with dietary restrictions or food intolerances. The enchiladas, particularly the *Enchiladas de Mole* are also worth mentioning—they’re simply amazing. Overall, this is a solid choice for anyone seeking flavorful and well-prepared Mexican cuisine.

First visit to this restaurant, nice patio seating.
I had the #6 shredded beef taco and cheese enchilada.
Good flavors all the way around, my only complaint is that the table chips were too tough and slightly hard to eat.
But a nice surprise at hearing the Mission bells ring, as the Mission is very close.
Good service, location has very limited parking.
Recommended.

Great family style Mexican restaurant. I have been stopping at El Maguey for years and have never been disappointed. I particularly like their ceviche and mole dishes.

We love El Maguey! The food is always super authentic and fresh. Whatever you order is excellent and they load the plates! The atmosphere has a good local atmosphere. It’s the only real Mexican restaurant in the area that is open at 8 am for breakfast.

The most authentic Mexican food in South County. My husband had the fish burrito and I had the best Cesar Salad yummy I will be ordering that again. Portion sizes leave enough for lunch the next day. I had the Watermelon Margarita with Taquine on the rim and had the regular with salt. Good drinks too!

We stopped for dinner at 8:13pm (their website says they close at 9. Backed up traffic in town from an accident at Ortega kept us from arriving earlier). We walked in, all the tables were cleared, chairs stacked. Nope, their service was done. We could order to go but even that was agreed to very begrudgingly. Don’t misunderstand, we love their food but maybe they should update their website to say they close at 8pm…

Absolutely the best Mexican food in Southern California. El Maguey is an institution for those of us who have grown up in Orange County. I’ve spent birthdays, Christmas Eves, and many happy moments in my life enjoying delicious Mexican food at El Maguey. The staff is so kind and so helpful and the food is so authentic and delicious that I can’t wait to go back there very soon.
