I ordered around 2:00 on a Thursday. There was no one in line. Surprisingly it took 14 minutes to get my food, so you may want to be sure you have a little time to spare. When she called out my name and I grabbed my food, she said sorry but I’m not sure why. Maybe it was sitting for a few minutes without her calling it out? I was standing right by the truck only a few feet from the window and I was completely visible. I’ll definitely be going back so I’ll see what the wait is like then.
I ordered a steak quesadilla Gordo’s way which adds pico de gallo and cilantro lime sauce. It was a styrofoam tray with foil and tied up in a plastic bag. There were no utensils or napkins in the bag so maybe you are supposed to ask for them or grab it from the shelf on the front of the truck? My food was still hot when I got home 5 minutes later. When I first opened the tray I noticed the quesadilla is really large! The top two pieces were a bit floppy and I couldn’t really pick them up with my hands too well, but the bottom two I could hold and eat with my hands. The tortilla was nicely grilled, the steak was super tender, and the cheese, pico and sauces all made this the best quesadilla I’ve ever had by far!! It was sooo good! The fork in the photos I had at home and I used as a reference for the size. Each slice is almost the size of a slice of pizza from a pizza chain. I saw photo and video reviews of people dunking it in sauces, but these weren’t included and you may have to ask and/or pay extra for them. It was plenty juicy and flavorful and did not need any dunking sauces. It was mildly spicy, and maybe a little less spicy than most salsas at local Mexican restaurants. The menu was similar to photos I’ve seen online, but they also had a specials board with churros and smashburgers. Between different tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, and burgers, there is plenty to choose from.
I cannot recommend this place enough based on the food from this first experience! I’m completely stuffed after that huge quesadilla, but I’m already trying to figure out when I’ll be going back.
Update:
I went back around 3:15 in the afternoon on a Friday. There was no wait and the girl working the window told me it would take about 5 minutes for my order, but think it was less than that. I ordered 3 tacos: carnitas, steak, and chicken with a side of cilantro lime sauce for $1. Wow, these are definitely the best tacos I’ve ever had! And they were loaded with meat. The cilantro and onions were so fresh. They also gave a small cup of salsa verde and it’s so flavorful. The cilantro lime sauce was out of this world. The corn tortillas were also delicious and tasted better than any others I’ve had. I don’t know I’m imagining that since everything was so good, or maybe they make the tortillas and they really are that good. I can easily see this place becoming an addiction. I can’t wait to try the other items. A lady waiting on her food today had El Gordo’s for the first time this week and she said it is so good that she has come back 3 days in a row. It really is that good!!
I’m from Roanoke and I’ll gladly drive all the way to Lynchburg just to eat here, that’s how good it is. Consistent, fresh, and worth every mile.
10/10 every single time. Highly recommend.
On top of that, we ordered some of our go-to favorites: the carne asada tacos and the chicken tacos. As always, they did not disappoint. Couldn’t be more pleased!
