While on travel, I asked a local for a Mexican restaurant recommendation. More specifically, I asked for an authentic Mexican restaurant. “Preferably a hole in the wall place with great food. No big chains.” Two people suggested El Giro.
I was on my way to a hotel from the airport and it was raining so heavy I could barely see the road. It has been raining solid for an hour. I arrived at the restaurant thinking it was going to be empty due to the storms. I step in and the place is packed full! “If people are willing to fight through torrential downpours on a Wednesday evening just to go to this place,” I thought, “it has to be good.”
They were right. My friend, Juan, and I have been traveling to Mobile regularly for 10 years. Long ago we set out to eat at every Mexican restaurant in the Mobile/Daphne/Fairhope/Foley/Gulf Shores area. We’ve been to dozens and we thought we discovered the best. Until I found El Giro. In my opinion, this is THE best Mexican restaurant in the entire area.
I ordered Fajitas Del Mar and, despite the restaurant being full, I received my sizzling hot meal before my clothes began to dry. The shrimp and the fish (likely tilapia) were cooked perfectly. Vegetables, the same.
One test I have for all Mexican places is the rice; is it generic, out-of-the-box bland or did they make an effort to add their own spices? El Giro rice passed the test. The whole huge meal was excellent.
Given the size of the meal, how quick it arrived, the authentic feel of the restaurant, and, of course, the taste of the food, this a highly recommended as one of the best, if not THE best, Mexican restaurant in the entire Mobile/Daphne/Fairhope/Foley/Gulf Shores area.
(I should add that the microwaved leftovers the next day were also very, very good.)

Absolutely disgusting experience. I found a hair in my food, and instead of taking responsibility or even offering to replace the dish, the staff had the nerve to blame my son for it. That’s beyond unprofessional. The way they handled it showed zero respect for customers and no concern for hygiene. If this is how they treat families and handle contamination in food, I’ll never be back and I wouldn’t recommend anyone else risk it either

Yall! The amount of food is large! The prices are standard. We dined on Friday early and promptly got seated in an already busy place. What’s nice is how fast the food came related to the number of people. Lots of people were waiting when we left. We ordered street tacos and fajotas. Our waitress was busy, experienced, and attentive! Getting a table right beside the door was not a good idea. However, grateful to have a place to eat. All the food was fresh including the HUGE amount of CILANTRO on the tacos. The fajitas needed a wee bit more seasoning. They had 6 different types of street tacos.

El Giro is the kind of Mexican restaurant where you walk in hungry and roll out questioning your life choices—in the best possible way. The chips disappeared faster than my willpower, the salsa had just enough kick to remind me I’m alive, and the tacos were so good I briefly considered proposing to the chef. If you leave El Giro still hungry, that’s on you.

Our youngest son and his family took us out for Mexican. The place was bustling. We were seated promptly and given the standard tortilla chips and salsa dip while we waited. I got a pineapple burrito. It was massive. I got half way through and got a to-go box. The wait staff were polite and patient. The wait staff were bilingual but my wife ordered in Spanish anyway. They enjoyed it. Plenty of food. It was hot and tastey.

I love this place. They’re my favorite Mexican restaurant in Mobile. The atmosphere is great, and they’re always busy, which means their food is fantastic because everyone wants to eat there. I recommend the special dinner, it’s a little bit of everything, so you get all the flavors.

I dont like americanized Mexican food but I keep getting dragged here by family. The menudo is good when they have it but everything else is so basic. My asada torta was so dry, nothing like what you get at a real taqueria. no toppings on it, had to pay for tomato and onion which should come standard. one sad packet of mayo on the side. Im just gonna stop going when invitied.

Food was great, I had a chicken quesadilla and a tostada. This place offers a great lunch time menu, with plenty to choose from. My daughter had the shrimp quesadilla, which smelled amazing.

Excelente!! El Giro is our go-to Mexican restaurant. Three reasons: consistency, chili relleno and history. We’ve eaten at El Giro (in different locations) for over 30 years. If I understand correctly, it is, or related to, the original El Giro on Hwy 90 in Mobile that was near the Greyhound station. It has consistently been the best good we have had. The chili relleno is the best version of this dish I can find. Perfectly made. Finally, the original restaurant was a regular outing when my wife and I first started dating in 1991. Staff is always friendly, service is always good. Sometimes a language barrier issue but nothing that can’t be handled. We’re always pleased. Current restaurant could stand a little cleaning but, hey, so could my home kitchen right? I recommend El Giro when you crave Mexican food, give it a try.
