El Fenix

  4.2 – 5 reviews  $$ • Mexican restaurant

Very few restaurants have the staying power to celebrate even a quarter-century of service, but El Fenix celebrated their Centennial! Founded in 1918, by Mike Martinez, a Mexican immigrant, El Fenix is credited as “The Originator of Tex-Mex Cuisine.” It has been named an “All American Icon” by Nation’s Restaurant News and a must-see dining destination for visitors to North Texas. Acquired by Local Favorite Restaurants™ in 2008, El Fenix was refurbished with freshened interiors and a revamped menu, while maintaining its signature authentic elements.

Branch of a long-running chain serving Tex-Mex staples in a hacienda-style setting.

The original El Felix building is beautiful and well maintained. A very pleasant environment. The food though was uneven and not so pleasant. The chips and salsa were good and the Queso with Piccadillo was also very good. We ordered cheese enchiladas and a beef fajita quesadilla. The cheese enchiladas were surprisingly tough and chewy. Looked like they had rolled them out and let them set for way too long. The Chile con carne sauce sauce on top had good flavor but the condition of the tortillas made made them unpleasant to eat. The quesadilla was served lukewarm and was not toasted enough. The fajita meat was good but didn’t make up for a tortilla that was cold and slightly soggy. I also had a spicy margarita that was very underwhelming. Very small, not weak and definitely not special. Overall, very disappointed.

My husband and I went to El Fenix for lunch on a Saturday. We were very pleased with our experience! The atmosphere was fun and festive. The food was delicious and the service was exceptionable. This location is in walking distance of many downtown Dallas attractions. It is a large restaurant with plenty of room for big groups. There were so many delicious items to choose from including plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free choices! Highly recommend!

It was okay the I had a combination of two different chicken dishes. It was good the meat could’ve been a little juicier and more cheese to balance all the spinach on there. The Spanish rice was not seasoned and has no flavor.

El Fenix was great the food was great Our server was great. Can someone please just explain the whole parking situation to me because I left my car (during my last visit) for three minutes and I received a parking ticket for 75$ … Today I paid $50 to use their parking lot for one hour only . It says go inside to validate but HOW if I can’t leave my car for three minutes make it make sense please. I will not be returning because the parking lot is confusing as hell and I paid $100 just to eat here. The parking lot is a scammmm

We visited El Fenix while on a trip to the science museum. Great location in downtown and delicious food. We are from out of state and I was skeptical how good this place would be. Y’all walk don’t run to El Fenix!!! Delicious and we experienced no wait time. Our waiter was absolutely amazing! We had chips, salsa, and lunch fajitas and it was all amazing!

Service was excellent. Waitress was awesome, kind and attentive. Menu was not impressive. Not much to choose from. Food was delivered quickly. Everything was super salty though. We could not finish eating anything. We ordered the sampler, with a queso container the size of my fingertip, chicken tacos and chicken tortilla soups.

We couldn’t get in at the place next door, so we went here. Food was good. Service was okay. I think our waiter was having an off night. Average experience overall. Food was a bit pricey. I would eat here again & give it another try.

No waiting to be seated. I am sure the restaurant around the corner is great, but the line. Anyway, Steve was our server. Great guy with a sense of humor. I had the Tampico which is a cheese enchilada and a beef enchilada with sour cream and red sauce respectively, rice and refried beans. The chips are light and flaky. Highly recommend.

I love eating at the original El Fenix. This takes me back to when I grew up in Little Mexico ,2911 Harry Hines, My Birth/ Childhood to age 6 play area, which has changed so much. One thing that HASN’T changed, is THIS AWESOME TASTING FOOD and RESTAURANT still like when I was a little girl and my Parents would bring me
