Wonderful experience! We had lunch there and everything was flavorful and perfectly prepared. We also tried the empanadas, and they were absolutely delicious! The service was excellent, and the staff was very kind and super friendly. The restroom was super clean, smelled great, and was very well equipped.
The place has a great atmosphere. There is a fish tank that adds a nice touch, and the music was at a low volume, making it very pleasant to enjoy our meal. We loved it and will definitely come back!

EVERYTHING was amazing. It’s super hard to find Puerto Rican food where we live. The food was delicious and reminded me of time spent with my family over food. The service was so hospitable and welcoming. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and inviting. I love the atmosphere. Also, get the flan. ❤️

Food was delightful and the service was perfect. If you like PR food, you’ll like this place. Sides like tostones are great (yummy sauce) as are rice and beans, and maduros. The atmosphere is very pleasant with a “local bar” feel. We will be back (I want to try the Cuban sandwich!)

A quaint authentic Puerto Rican cuisine gem. Jamie, our server and bartender, was delightful. Her hospitality was unmatched and she was running the show all on her own. The food was fantastic for the most part. We got the Cuban slider appetizer and the empanada sampler and both were delish and fresh. Pictured is the Cuban sandwich entree and yellow rice with pigeon peas which I HAD to get after that amazing appetizer. My only note is the garlic chicken breast dish my partner got was very dry. The potato salad saved the day there. So unique and so tasty! However, everyone else loved their dishes and left full and happy!

El Coqui’s Restaurant & Bar has the best food in the area!!! The empanadas, rice and peas, tres leches and cuban sandwiches tasted as if they were home cooked with love by grandma. The music, atmosphere and overall vibe that Carmen provides is unmatched!!! She is one of a kind! I am so blessed to have found this restaurant and am looking forward to supporting again and again! So NICE to have a piece of PR in Shallotte! Carmen, your restaurant is truly a gem!!!

The food was absolutely amazing. I got 3 empenadas: pork, chicken, and beef. I’ll be stopping in again. I met the new owner Picasso. What a solid dude with an amazing personality. We talked Puerto Rico, the area, my sobriety, and Jesus. I’ll be making the trip from Longs again just to bring my wife here. I can’t tell you what a delightful experience it was to not only have THE BEST empenadas I’ve ever had, but to also meet a really friendly guy who loves Jesus. I highly recommend this little spot 10/10 would recommend to everyone who wants authentic Puerto Rican food and authentic conversation with a really awesome guy.

Really enjoyed my first time here with my wife. Very friendly staff and some food like no where else around. Got the chicken stew where you add your own rice and beans…wonderful. Sliders appetizers are sooooo good. My wife got a chicken salad and it was seasoned so well without dressing. We got there early, but they have live music at night. We will be back.

Wasn’t very busy, surprisingly since the food was amazing!!! Order beef empanadas and yellow rice. Tried the Cuban sliders and the sweet fried plantains everything came out hot and delicious! I haven’t had authentic Puerto Rican food in sooo long. I could have cried over the rice itself lol tasted like nostalgia. Literally drove 2 hours to try it and was most definitely worth the trip!

We had an absolutely amazing dining experience! The meal was fantastic, with food that exceeded our expectations. We ordered the Cuban sandwich and the empanadas, and both were incredible. The sandwich was perfectly made, and the empanadas were hands-down the best we’ve ever had.

The highlight of our visit, however, was the outstanding service. Coach, the bartender, was phenomenal—attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was perfect for us. The combination of excellent food and exceptional service made our visit truly memorable. Highly recommend!

A native to Puerto Rico. I had a desire for Arroz con Gandules, Roast Pork and Empanadas. I googled for a Restaurant and found El Coqui. A 45 minute drive from Myrtle Beach to Shallot, N.C sent me back to Myrtle Beach with a full stomach and a big smile on my face!
