Best tacos I had in Melbourne
I decided to try this place recommended by friends. 100% worth it. The tacos were amazing, with the double tortilla just as it should be. The suadero tacos were my absolute favorite. Just writing this makes me salivate. I liked it so much that I went back two days later with friends. Absolutely worth it. The staff were the best.
Also, don’t skip the horchata. We ordered just 2 glasses, but honestly we should have ordered the whole jar. It’s that good. You won’t be able to stop slurping.

The food was incredible!! Every single dish that was served to us was packed full of flavour and absolutely delicious. We tried the cactus tacos which were new to us, and we were blown away. The service was excellent and the vibes were so goood! 10/10 would recommend. Oh and the flan don’t even get me started! Yum

It’s the closest to an authentic Mexican restaurant I’ve been to, here in Melbourne. The staff speaks Spanish. I tried the Pastorqueso, Suadero and Campechana (Suadero con Chorizo), with Agua de Horchata. It was so good. The best was suadero, and after that the Campechana. Pastorqueso was a bit underwhelming but it tastes just like what Pastor tastes like in Australia. You should definitely get Suadero. The Campechana was so good too, I think I would’ve liked the chorizo to be chopped instead of sliced but the flavors are all there. There was also a Mango Habanero sauce, but it tastes like a sweet chipotle sauce. I’m definitely coming back! I’m excited to try Chilaquiles next

We were given this place as a recommendation from a Mexican friend so we expect it would be really good. Hoping to get some food and coffee for brunch around 11 am but no coffee. I had a chorizo sandwich which crisp which was okay. The sausage and the sauce was good, but baguette bread was a bit soggy like it has been heating up in a microwave before adding the filling.
The music was a bit too loud and it made people in the restaurant talked even louder so they can hear each other.

It surpassed my expectations. The menu is quite big but there was only one vegetarian filling (Nopal), which is cactus, and it honestly surprised me. I’m very open to trying new things, and the Cheese Nopal Tacos were super delicious. The tortilla tasted homemade (I’m not sure if they actually make it in-house). My friends also enjoyed their tacos, and the tostadas we shared were super yummy as well — the beans were outstanding. We had some cheladas, and they even gave us a mezcal shot for my friend’s birthday. It was busy to be Monday so I recommend do a booking. I would definitely recommend this place and come back.

This is definitely the most authentic Mexican restaurant in Melbourne because I have visited almost all of them. The taste is like you have ordered and it was prepared in Mexico. I’ll make sure I’ll pass on the finding to my friends in Melbourne. Thank you. We loved it. Sorry we were very hungry and didn’t take any photos. I ordered the barbacoa tacos and couldn’t believe the taste.

El Culumpio is more than just a restaurant, it’s the place of your dreams. One bite and you’ll question your life choices and wonder why you haven’t came here sooner, the food makes you feel like you’ve taken a trip across the world and landed in Mexico. Everyday that I step foot in there brings a new surprise, one day barbacoa tacos, then pozole, then tamales, then chilaquiles all with my agua de horchata. The head chef is a passionate man that prioritises delivering an authentic experience.

Response: It was not a busy afternoon. I saw the chef just practically waiting for my order. I try to help the industry by not ordering thru Uber-like delivery although I felt like my order was treated like an Uber order. It’s a common knowledge that establishments make less money unless they order and pick up direct. But look at the picture. Would you pay $33.00 for that? It was practically just sauteed pulled beef with onion and slapped over soft taco shells. Didn’t taste like Mexican to me. Was it also a mistake? Yes, there was a serving of green salsa and 2 thin slices of lemon. Probably that makes it Mexican. BTW, I’m all for weekend surcharge because I know you have to pay more for your staff. And thank you for the offer of a refund (for the missing cheese) – but thank you.
***Got excited when I first learned about this restaurant advertising as a Mexican restaurant. I ordered Suadequeso and there was NO cheese. I feel cheated. If you didn’t have the cheese on the day, why not be honest about it. Almost everybody knows what QUESO is! I wouldn’t have mind the $33.00 (surcharge inc) as long as I get what I paid for.

Tried out El Columpio in Fitzroy — a solid Mexican spot doing generously filled tacos and hearty sides. Just a heads-up: the tacos come on soft, non-toasted tortillas, so don’t expect any crunch. That said, they load them up, and each taco is wrapped in two tortillas, so you could easily split it and make two if you wanted.
At $9.50 a taco, it’s not cheap, but the portion makes up for it. My favourite filling was the brisket — juicy and full of flavour. The pork and lamb were a bit on the dry or chewy side for me, so not my top picks. The chorizo tasted more like a kabana-style sausage than a crispy chorizo, but it had a decent spicy kick I wasn’t expecting — still enjoyable.
The nacho-style plate and tortilla + dips side pack were standout starters — perfect to share, especially with the guac. We also got jalapeños with caramelised onions, which were tasty but not spicy at all — not quite what we expected, but a nice touch.
And beware — the house hot sauce at the end of the table is seriously hot. Like, not-for-the-faint-hearted hot.
Overall, the food was solid, if a little pricey, but the service really lifted the whole experience. Shoutout to the young guy serving us — super friendly, helpful, and made the night that much more enjoyable.
