I wish I could give this place a negative 5. That’s how bad our experience was today! Group of 6. Very few tables were taken, so they had no excuse for what happened next.

Placed our order at 11:40am. The food BEGAN to arrive in pieces at 12:02. The first “shift” brought us 2 complete meals and 2 partials. Then a few minutes later the second “shift” brought another plate and a partial. Then the “third” shift one more plate. Finally at 12:20 the final item was brought. It was then explained that the soup for my wife’s taco soup would be brought out by the manager because of a mix up in the kitchen. (this explains the photo of the soup WITHOUT the soup) She did and it was COLD!!!!!!! The liquid was in a metal cup. The manager should have noticed it was cold when she touched it! So I grabbed the plate and took it to the manager. Around 12:25, she brought the warm soup. She stated we would not be charged for the soup and apologized. The waitress barley did anything. The manager had to bring us more drinks.

Another thing that was concerning was there was a young boy, 9-10, bringing chips, water and other things out to the tables. I don’t think this is legal. But I’m not familiar with the laws.

This place has STIFF competition all around them. Chuy’s just opened 500′ from this place. Casa Herrera’s is right behind them. Miguel’s is a 5 minute drive away. In my opinion El Chico’s won’t last much longer. We noticed another table with issues and the manager was dealing with them. The ONLY reason we went here was to celebrate our mother’s birthday and it’s her favorite place. I predict she’ll have to find a new favorite place pretty soon.

But…… my tacos were GREAT!!! 🙂

Ok I am so sad and disappointed. I have loved this place all my life. I have loved coming here. We should of realized when we walked up and it was basically empty on a Saturday at 645pm. The beer was hot. We sat for at 45 minutes just waiting on drinks. Our server was trying so hard but had no support. Total lack of management. Kitchen messed up out order and every single table around us. It was just horrible. We won’t be back and it breaks my heart. Its nothing like the place that I have enjoyed for years and years.

The food taste like microwave food, the salsa taste like spaghetti sauce, sodas where flat, chips have no taste, the meat was suppose to be made with jalapeño peppers but all they did instead was throw a bunch of black pepper over the meat to make it spicy, the flour tortillas taste like plastic. Other then that they had good music and nice waitresses.

Growing up, we used to eat at El Chico quite often. The staff was great, always friendly and practically treated you like family. Nowadays, not so much. I’ve heard they’ve gone downhill, so I went for lunch to see for myself. Well, rumors were true. The staff from hostess, waitress and busser all seemed annoyed to even be there, distracted, and just not very friendly. The young lady that brought our food, instead of setting the plate on the table, she just handed it to my daughter. Waitstaff 101, always set the plate on the table in front of the customer. Never just hand it to them!! We asked for a couple of small plates, and instead of going to get them, she just grabbed a couple off the dirty table next to us that customers had just left from! Fajitas used to be good. Not anymore. Beef was very tough and chewy, chicken had a lot of gristle, veggies hardly cooked, and temp was barely warm. Our queso wasn’t even warm. So disappointed. Sweet tea however was good. Won’t go back anytime soon. So if you’re craving good Mexican or Tex Mex food, there’s many other establishments in Abilene to check out!

I absolutely love El Chico Cafe!! It’s been my favorite restaurant since I was a little kid!! The food is great! My favorite part is when we go in and our favorite server is there Ms Juanita! She has all of our drinks memorized, knows that we like fresh tortillas and butter brought out with our chips and salsa! She’s just amazing!! Will never stop eating here!!

I haven’t been here in a very long time and coming back is probably the best decision I have ever made.
The food is always so fresh and the service is top notch.
I mainly come because free queso, I don’t know any other place in town that offers that. I also love the flavor of the salsa and that it’s not crazy hot to eat just perfection.
Only negative I have is the rice. The rice is pretty terrible almost like pilaf. It’s not normal Mexican rice so I skip out on it.
Oh first time having the apple pie for dessert and I highly recommend!

Stayed home all week long. Stopped to eat at this place to treat myself .Im a single widow. The only thing was that I’ve never seen Enchiladas with no cheese on top. I had to tell the waiter and she took it and brought it back with cheese. For you waitresses the way things are and everything is so expensive , let me tell you if you get a tip of 25 cents be thankful for it. I left 1.00 because that’s all I can afford. I write this with no offense but you waitresses have to realize that people are struggling and some cannot afford the tips your desiring to receive. The lady cashier asked me if I wanted the 1.45 cents change I told her yes because the way things are now EVERYHING is so expensive. And my food was 18.24. But Oh well if she felt that I was crying for 1.45 cents oh well it is what it is. I need my change because the way things are now and I’m disabled . And I hadn’t eaten at this place for like 8 years or more. Other than that the food was great.

Visiting Abilene, TX for some Christmas shopping. Mall closes at 7pm, along with this restaurant and we walked up at twenty minutes till thinking the restaurant would stay open later than the mall. I tried walking back out so that we could let them close. I hate walking in late or near closing. But they insisted it wouldn’t be a problem and we could come right in. The service from everyone in the restaurant was absolutely amazing! The food was just as great! Our waitress was Chrissy and she was extra super nice and did an amazing job. Great Job El Chico’s and great job Chrissy!
