We had heard good things about this place and so we went. We opened the door and for a moment thought it was closed because it was a little dark and there was a retractable belt keeping us from entering the dinning area. Then a lady came to greet us. Not exactly sure what was all she said but she ended with, “we add an automatic 15% gratuity to every check, does that work for you?” She stood there waiting for an answer not even hinting she would remove the belt until she got an answer from us. Not a very good first impression. I get it that maybe people are stingy but that message can easily go on your menus like other restaurants do. The place is beautiful inside. Some of the food was good. The chorizo appetizer not worth it. The portions were fair. The machete was very good. The attention from waitress was ok. I waited to ask and receive a spoon a little too long. Fix the welcome and you might have more business.

So yummy!!! we got the birriaquiles and chicken flautas (pictures) we also got choriqueso which was delicious but we didn’t get a picture because we devoured it! We also really loved their signature salsa it was delicious and had just the right amount of heat. The environment and ambiance was really nice and inviting! Overall super yummy and can’t wait to bring our friends and family!!

Strangest dining experience I’ve ever had in Salt Lake. The food is amazing, but the staff is kind of rude and it all costs a pretty penny. It felt like walking into an exclusive club you weren’t invited to. The doors and windows are opaque. They have you wait in the tiny entrance behind a rope gate before seating you. The staff is very direct and almost too much so. Immediately took our menus once we finished ordering. Seats are wood and kind of uncomfortable.

Right when you arrive, there’s a retractable belt you have to wait behind before even walking in. Personally, a simple “Please wait to be seated” sign would feel much more welcoming. Before being seated, you’re also told that a 15% gratuity is automatically added to the bill and that you have to agree to it upfront. While I understand the intention, the process felt a bit transactional and not very warm as a guest.

The food itself was good, solid and enjoyable, but nothing that completely blew me away. I would eat here again. That said, the prices felt a little high for what you get.

Overall, this restaurant could be great with a few small changes to the guest experience. A more inviting entrance and a smoother approach to gratuity would go a long way in making diners feel comfortable and welcomed.

I ordered the chilaquiles with pork and they were ok for my taste buds. Not favorite but they were not bad either! Disclaimer, I like them spicy and there were no options to make them spicier! They were more reasonably priced than other Mexican restaurants with similar memu!

This place is fancy, yet relaxing. Lots of greenery. Music at a tolerable volume so you’re not yelling to talk with your table. Even the bathrooms were nice.

They include the tip at 15% but I left more because they deserved it.

The Birria Tacos were the best I’ve tasted. The consome was perfectly seasoned.

The green salsa that is a special recipe is AMAZING! You do pay for chips and salsa but it’s worth it, with the portions.

They offer specialty coffees as well. I had the Carmel macchiato. It was perfect. Not too sweet!

The service was excellent. They definitely have pride in what they do.

The first time visiting this restaurant, it was super clean and nice. Everything about it was gorgeous and the food was absolutely fantastic, except the service that was given to us by our waitress was horrible. Starting with they charge you with the tip already at 20%, and of course one doesn’t say no if the tip is already included, but at least wait for us to see the service that you give us, and i didn’t receive it. As the lady who was taking care of us, was rude, and didn’t care what I had asked for. And it was on a Monday were a lot of people weren’t there it wasn’t busy. It was more than 3 times that she had taken off our center piece, for the kids not to touch it.

Inviting Fancy Mexican, very clean. I had the 4 Birria tacos. Came with avocado salsa and consome, both sooooo good. We tried the green salsa. Chefs kiss.
They make everything fresh daily. You do pay for chips and salsa but it’s worth it. The fresh chips come in a large bowl and they don’t skimp on salsa.
They also serve specialty coffee.
The service was top tier. Quiet with music at a perfect volume. Would take pictures, but the food didn’t last that long.. Will be back asap!!

El Barril has a variety of Mexican dishes that no matter what you eat you are going to be blown away by the flavor. They have done multiple upgrades from the old location to this new location and every update has definitely been a better one.

The chilaquiles and enchiladas are some of the dishes that I keep coming back to so definitely try it.

The ambience of this location is definitely somewhere you can take your spouse or a date.
