The food is good, but the customer service, specifically at the front….is consistently terrible. The cashier, “Maura”, had an attitude from the moment we ordered (as she always does), entered our order incorrectly, and didn’t provide a receipt. When we realized we were missing 2 consomés we called, she NEVER mentioned anything about bringing the tacos back, we weren’t aware that she had made a mistake on the kind of tacos we wanted, we just thought we were missing our consomés. When we returned we asked just for the two consomés, and we were told we’d have to pay extra to fix an error that was not ours and bring the tacos BACK. When I mentioned that my boyfriend and I come here frequently, she responded by saying she had “never seen me,” only him, pointing at my boyfriend. As if that somehow invalidated what I was saying. That response was dismissive, unnecessary, and honestly shady. Whether it’s me or him, we’re still paying customers placing the same orders. I asked if she was the manager, she immediately said the manager is her cuñado, making it very clear this is a family situation and implying that nothing would be done. That response alone speaks volumes.
To the owner: I hope you actually read this. Keeping someone up front just because they’re family is hurting your business. My boyfriend and I come here multiple times a week, and every time SHE’S working there’s attitude, pushback, and unnecessary tension, even with large orders. We’ve paid extra in the past just to avoid dealing with her, but this situation crossed the line. And judging by older reviews, this isn’t an isolated complaint, it’s a pattern that’s clearly being ignored.
I’m a shift supervisor in fast food, and this level of customer service is unacceptable. Family or not, the person interacting with customers should represent your business professionally. Because of this, we won’t be returning.

I haven’t eaten at this place in over 10 years until recently. My wife and I were not disappointed in the slightest! We ordered the California burrito as we always do. Amazing fresh food and the employees were on top of it getting our food to us quickly. Highly recommend this place, they deserve more 5-star reviews!

What a disaster of a place! The cashier lady was mad that we were there to order food and contribute to her business.. i got a simple huevos rancheros, the eggs were black because they were cooked on an unclean grill with burnt oil; the lady was pissed that I refused to eat the food with eye roles, sarcastic tone and harrasment.. she was like you are not regular here! Ture! It was my First and last time.. this place needs a visit from health department for sure

If you are looking for huge portion, greasy delicious Mexican food look no further.
Been going here since I was a kid, amazing breakfast burritos. You can get the “jr.” breakfast burrito for like $6 that’s the size of a normal burrito everywhere else in the world.
P.S. Best red sauce out of any mexican food restaurant i’ve been to.

Tried out carne asada plate and it tasted old dry and just not fresh. Kind of like microwaving leftovers. Disappointed. Reasonable price nowadays so thats a positive.

AMAZING food for a great price!!
We go out of our way just for the food here.
My go to spot for Mexican plates! I HIGHLY recommend the pollo asada plate or the rosarito plate. But anything on their menu will not disappoint.
The staff is friendly and now knows us as regulars
You can eat there but seating isn’t the best.

This is our favorite spots in La Mesa for breakfast burritos!!! Always great service even though they aren’t on any apps and it’s not a drive thru, it’s still worth calling to order ahead and pickup.

The food was very tasty and was a generous serving size. The prices are phenomenal especially for the fact that you get so much food at such a great price. The value and taste is definitely worth stopping by. This is one of the few Mexican food spots that still give you plenty of food at a low price. Add it to your bucket list!

I had the tacos de chicharrón. They were delicious and pretty spicy. The tacos were larger than I expected, they were full size corn tortillas.

Absolutely the best bang for your buck in La Mesa, CA. 10 bucks for a California burrito in one of the most expensive cities in the USA. Sign me up. Even in Oregon burritos are at minimum 12ish dollars now and they are smaller in size. The service was fast and when dining in we got a green and red sauce. Both delicious!
Thank you for what you do El Azteca, really appreciate it, especially as a frugal traveler.
