If you are traveling along I-81 and craving something real and comforting, Edelweiss is the place you want. This German log-cabin style restaurant is a true hidden gem in the Shenandoah Valley. The atmosphere feels like stepping into a cozy inn somewhere deep in Bavaria. Warm wood, German décor, and on weekends live music that makes the whole place come alive.

The food is absolutely authentic and consistently excellent. I had the Rindsrouladen which was tender, richly seasoned, and served with Bavarian cabbage and mashed potatoes that tied everything together perfectly. My wife had the Wiener Schnitzel with red cabbage and spatzel, and it was cooked to golden perfection. Generous portions, great flavors, and everything tasted homemade.

Service was friendly even though the place was packed. They move quickly but never make you feel rushed. Prices are very fair for the quality and portion size.

We stop here every time we travel between Bristol and D.C. because it is one of the few places along the route that is always worth a detour. If you want hearty, authentic German food in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, Edelweiss is as good as it gets. Highly recommend.

Quick stop off of I-81 for lunch. Menu has a variety of German fare. All meals served with family style sides of spaetzel, green beans, cabbage & sauerkraut. Delicious! Service was efficient and polite. German beer and wine served and the beer was good. Will go again!

Loved the cozy atmosphere for lunch. Extremely helpful wait staff navigating the menu and offering suggestions that fit our preferences. Jagerschnitzel was amazing!! We split a couple of entrees to get the full experience. I am not usually a gravy fan at all but I could not get enough of the mushroom onion gravy. And the black forest cake is a must. Thank you for the hospitality, will definitely be coming back to sample more great food and music.

If you’re in the mood for German food, then this place is for you! We recently had lunch there and felt that we traveled back to a log cabin in the Black Forest. The service was friendly and incredibly fast. The food was excellent and large portions. My son and I both enjoyed our dining experience.

When we stopped for gas along I-81 I Googled top rated restaurants and this place popped up. The food is uniquely delicious, the servers are polite & timely and the decor is spot on for a German restaurant. Highly recommend!!! We’ll be back when traveling through this area. FYI, they had live music on a Sunday evening

German themed restaurant with live music. (at least on the weekends.) The food was good. I haven’t ate a lot of german food so I don’t have much to compare it too. The theme was well done. The service was fast and friendly. I will definetly eat here again.

January 9, 2026 – If you’re hungry, stop & enjoy fine German cuisine at Edelweiss !

Chef Ingrid Moore’s roots traced back to her family in a war torn Germany. She immigrated to the U.S. , started up her restaurant in 1981. Glad she shares her cooking expertise here in the Staunton area!

My wife and I returning from Natural Bridge, noticed this restaurant on our way home. Our friends spoke highly of this restaurant, so we all returned for dinner.

Our server Patricia seated us in a packed dining room. (Only groups of 10 or more are allowed reservations) We looked over the menus, as the 2 accordion players sang along! We asked for a couple of minutes.

Patricia returned for our drink choices. I love German beer! There’ a good selection of Lager beers , bottom yeast fermented beers. . . . ( Ales are top fermented beers ) Pilsners, Dunkels, Weizen are all good German styles of beer!

Cute restaurant, Christmas decorations still up . . . A festive ambience at Edelweiss ! Patricia returns with our drinks and we place our meal orders. Two of us ordered Rahmschnitzel . . . thin sliced pork medallions sautéed in mushrooms & sour cream sauce ! Yummy !
I ordered Jagerschnitzel . . . Sliced pork fillets breaded & pan fried, topped onion gravy, mashed potatoes on the side, with side garden salad.
The last order , Rindsrouladen . . . Thinly slice beef, stuffed w/ mix of beef, herbs, pickles, carrots, bacon, and spices. All entrees receive small sides of red cabbage, Bavarian green cabbage, green beans, and Spatzle ( German noodles) .

A wonderful evening at Edelweiss, thank you Chef Ingrid! We all loved your delicious meals , don’t know how we had room for your homemade desserts? Oh . . . my wife & I shared a slice of Black Forrest Cake ! Our friends shared an Apple Crumb Cake !
So delicious, we shall return !

I noticed two plaques on the wall, written in German . . . and asked AI to translate :

1. A joyful heart and peaceful home are what make life happy!

2. Good wine and good company are the best ways to pass the time!

Not as good as it was a decade ago, but the atmosphere is still fabulous. Didn’t care for the stuffed cabbage or Rahmschnitzle. Sides weren’t as good as they were. Black forest cake was still good, but didn’t care for it being very cold. The tortes are just regular cakes. It may be another decade before we return. Hope it regains what it had.

This small, cozy restaurant is extremely well decorated in particular for Christmas holidays. The service was very good and friendly and the authentic German live music provided nice ambience, was not loud at all. I don’t know anything about German cuisine, and this may be very authentic and a great representation. But it’s just not to my liking. There is not much difference between dishes.

Ate here with large family and was quite impressed! Food was amazing, waiters worked very hard very loyally and for your best interests! It was so enjoyable! It was a little loud and busy, but that is to be expected at lunch rush! The building was clean and well kept and very home like! Would definitely eat here again!
