East Side Deli in DTLA delivers true Italian deli authenticity.

The moment you walk in, the place has that classic, old-school charm—walls filled with character, the hum of a busy counter, and a warm neighborhood energy that feels genuine, not forced. It’s the kind of deli that clearly values tradition and keeps things simple in the best way.

The Caprese sandwich reflects that approach: fresh ingredients, balanced flavors, and the straightforward preparation you expect from a proper Italian deli. Nothing overdone, just quality and care.

East Side Deli is a great reminder of what a real neighborhood deli should feel like. A solid spot in DTLA for anyone who appreciates authenticity, good food, and a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere.

Easily the worst sub I’ve had in my life. Ordered the number 10. The bread was stale, the tomato was thicker than all the meats combined. Took about 20 min to get my order even though it wasn’t busy. Napkins were all over the floor. Disappointed for the price point and was looking forward to coming here in person for a long time. I’ve ordered once before on a delivery app, a tuna sandwich. That was disappointing too but I figure it was because of the transit time. Idk how you mess up a sandwich, but they nailed it.

I looked this place up while traveling around LA and saw the good reviews. A lot of places can be overhyped but I wanted a good Italian sandwich. I can say that the reviews are accurate, the service was great and the sandwiches were fantastic. I had the spicy Italian and it was one of the best I’ve ever had.

Our first time here but not our last. Cannot say enough. The staff is friendly. They clean the tables regularly, therefore its clean!!! It’s an old school deli and their food is amazing. I had the meatball sub. Homemade meatballs and sauce with provolone cheese. Bomby! The deli sub breads are fresh and soft. My husband got the pastrami plate. Which is basically a deconstructed pastrami sandwich. Allows for the bread to not get soggy. Our experience was amazing. Free parking outfront for one hour! Oh yeah- the service was quick. So we didn’t wait long after we ordered for our food!

The Baseline
The Baseline: For a sandwich place, the sandwiches must have fresh, quality ingredients, it must efficiently make my sandwich, additional sides must be available, and there should be unique offerings.

Food: I have two main Italian sandwich shops in the Los Angeles area and this is my eastern LA spot. I loved their sandwiches and it is a craving that will pop up when I am downtown. #2 Italian Meatball with Cooked peppers and cheese is my favorite with 4 to five good sized meatballs covered in sauce and cheese. The peppers marry the flavors and I add in some Italian giardiniera for good measure. Also great is the #1 Italian sausage or the #9 Italian cold cuts. Can’t go wrong with a sandwich here.

Service: Fast friendly walk up ordering counter with fast and convenient pick up counter. Efficient and awesome.

Ambiance: Los Angeles Americana at its finest and this takes me back to the day before the hustle and bustle of the modern city. Patriotic and nostalgic decor all over the deli. This is a Los Angeles staple that we all should love and support.

When I was a kid, I would stay with my grandparents after school until I got picked up to go home. More often than not, my grandpa would bring his leftover sandwich home after work at DWP and I thought it was the most delicious sandwich I’d ever had, not knowing where its from.

Now that he’s passed, I’ve since found out the sandwiches are from Eastside Deli and whenever I have a chance to go out here I order his #7 roast beef/pastrami.

To keep the tradition going and also to keep a piece of him with me and remember the good times and also have an amazing sandwich. Let’s go Dodgers!

Food is superb! I only knocked off a bit for the lack of parking and for occasionally having a hard time finding a place to sit. I suppose it’s a testament to their enduring popularity, and well worth the wait. I highly recommend getting the plates instead of the sandwiches. You still get the bread and it’s way easier to eat, in my humble opinion.

Sandwiches are big and delicious. The D.A and the bear r so good. Can’t wait to go again and try other sandwiches. Make sure to get yellow peppers for an extra spice.

Must try. Part of LA history. Service is incredible. Pastrami was great. I had the eggplant parm. Needed to be a bit thinner and more crispy imho. The cypress was great as well.
