We started out with a carafe of Sangria. The Sangria is definitely one of the best I’ve ever had (and I love Sangria). We liked it so much, we got another carafe to end dinner with. Then came the Spanish potato and egg pie. Yum or delicious is not enough to describe this pie – hot, fried, perfectly seasoned…it was just the thing we needed on a cold night and an entire day of driving. I absolutely recommend this! This was followed by the 3 piece skewers (pork much better than the chicken), the crispy plantains (an absolute delight to eat, particularly with the garlic sauce and the sweet sauce they came with), the fried plantains (not really my style but they were also good), and the pickled chicken. The pickled chicken was disappointing. It wasn’t as cooked as we would’ve liked it. The pickled liquid and onion with olives were very yummy. So, we ended up having that, rather than the chicken pieces.
For the main, I got the manchego cheese and guava jelly sandwich because it was different and I wanted to try it. It had an option of adding ham. I did. Don’t do it. The ham wasn’t as crispy as I would’ve liked and it made the whole sandwich very salty. Without the ham, the sandwich was very yummy! Definitely on the sweeter side but totally worth it. I highly recommend it.
The beef stew and the meat pie basically have the stew which is a highlight of the meal. Whichever one you take, you win! The bean soup accompanying them was also delicious. Again, I highly recommend it.
This was our best dining experience in Mammoth. The food is worth the wait and pricing. An absolute must-check-out when you come here.
P.S. the parking lot is the first left before the restaurant so please don’t drive all the way to the restaurant building as you will be on a dirt road. The servers are nice but there could be a language barrier. The pricing is on the higher side.
Flavors are ok. Our pork skewer was dry. We have pickled shrimp and octopus; the flavor is all right, but it’s kind of off putting with eggs and oil.
Guava Glazed Ham was cooked very nicely; however it is way too sweet. Ground beef stew with rice was interesting; olives made the dish work. However, all the entrees are heavy on the rice and beans with a small portion of protein. The host seemed to be offended when we didn’t want to take beans with us. It’s just beans, and the Cuban Black Beans are just bland.
Remember the last time you wished you could be in two places at the same time?
Score!
So you’re in Mammoth Lakes for skiing or hiking, but the Caribbean Islands and their culture are calling you…big time?
Especially their food!
And you say to yourself, “No way Mammoth has any decent fried tostones, Maduros, sweet plantains, yuca al Mojo in garlic sauce, rice with red or black beans, pork and steak, or that infamous ‘Cubano sando’, coconut bread pudding, or best of all…that sweet and silky Flan, just no way”
You’d be sooo, so wrong…follow me!
Just walk through that inconspicuous door, and you’ll immediately be blown away…
And transported…(you pick your island)
The colors, the sound, (as in live music), the aromas, the energy, and all the conversation and laughter around you.
That’s what good food does, it excites and even elevates you while you create ‘core memories’ with your loved-ones joining you, and in here…they’ll be darn good memories for sure! Loud and colorful ones even!!
The flavors are incredible, the building and its history will take you away, the menu is Cuban/Puerto Rican, and so, so traditional, (your own tia’ would approve), the recipes go back generations, the service…just like family is joining you for dinner.
And how about that location huh…and that one of a kind view!
Seating is available inside and outside…It is Mammoth right?!
My daughter and I came here 3 times during our stay. Our servers ultimately called us by name, and we were even introduced to the owners. Just lovely!
My money is on you doing the same thing!
Highly recommend this very special and unique establishment!
