The staff was very polite. Unfortunately the food did not meet the expectations. I had ribs and 2 beans. Both came out overly sweet. Ribs were more bone than meat. The meat part are quite burned. Cornbread was very dry. Waited for about 30 minutes or so when there were 4 orders ahead of me which had supposedly been there quite some time as they were enjoying some samples from the chef. Wanted to support the neighborhood shop due to recent break-in in the area. Well I did my part and probably won’t go back.

Loved it! My husband and I have been searching for authentic southern BBQ since moving to the island last year. We finally found Donnie’s when we saw their truck at a food festival in Waikiki. Not only is the first and only southern BBQ we’ve found, but it was delicious. We also went to their restaurant in Waipahu. The menu is extensive and includes the meats and sides that are only found in southern BBQ: corn bread, fried okra, collards, etc. I ordered the fried catfish, and my husband had the brisket. Both were outstanding. I would definitely recommend Donnie’s, and it’s well worth the ride to Waipahu, even if you’re coming from Honolulu!

The biggest issue I have is the inconsistency of schedule. I have gone 2 Sundays in a row at 1pm scheduled time with no opening. I have come at 4pm on a Wednesday and still not opened. As a restaurant with a decent following, your customers should know about changes made to hours or if you are actually still even in business. We had a great run, but I have been very disappointed in the lack of communication of operating hours. And I am tired of being disappointed at this rate.

I unfortunately would NOT recommend coming here to eat. I was extremely dissatisfied with the food. I ordered the catfish platter with mac and cheese and sweet potatoes for sides. The catfish was the only thing kind of ok but very salty. Seems like that was the only seasoning put on it. And it was a little tough. The mac and cheese (bland) and sweet potatoes (too sweet, just bathed in sugar) taste like they were from a box; unpleasant and not flavourful at all. Also the side portions were too small for the amount of money charged for the plate ($26). But it was ok because I would not want more of that. The platter came with cornbread which was hard as a brick and of course lacked flavour. I just threw that out. Buying this meal made me very angry because I wasted my money and I was hungry. I wrote this review not to bash but to be honest about my experience and hopefully help others make an informed decision about coming here. I know it is hard being a small business owner but I think it is important to take pride in your food and make it enjoyable for your customers. If other people like this and want to call it soul food, to each his own. But I assure you it is not. Hopefully they improve. On a positive note the greeter/cashier and older gentleman (possibly cook) were very nice.

How do I describe this place…. soul food yummy. I couldn’t decide on what I wanted. So I got catfish, ribs, pulled pork, collard greens mac and cheese, shrimp grits gumbo oh lordt the money I spent but the memories thay camer back. My grandma’s gumbo was in that bowl. I had to catch myself from crying. Everything was so good. I will be back.

You can tell the food had been sitting out. The okra and fried catfish was cooked in the same unseasoned batter. My ribs were tough. It was an expensive let down. For the price of the food, the portions and the taste I was really disappointed. The sides were ok. I honestly think that if you go when its freshly made it might not be as bad.

This place apparently only caters to “regulars”. This was my second-chance visit and AGAIN the “front of house” casher/host acted as if we were tourists he’d never see again. Acted totally unfamiliar with their menu and was COMPLETELY uninterested in making sure our order was correct. The staff openly mocked other customers that called in about receiving the wrong food. It’s a big shame. The menu selection is rare for Oahu, but they just don’t try. Greens tasted like straight from a can. $70 for 2 lunch plates and no respect. If you want this style food, I’d suggest Hughley’s Southern Cuisine were you’ll, at least, feel welcome.

It pains me that my experience here was poor because it’s a black owned family business. I really had high hopes.
The staff were very polite and the service was excellent.
My issue was with the food. The brisket sandwich was delicious. No complaints.
The jerk chicken plate was no good. It was a dry rub chicken breast. It just missed the mark for me. The only stand out on that dish was the gravy on the rice.
The dirty rice was not good and neither was the red beans & rice.
The Mac that I received in my actual meal was tasty; BUT the large side I ordered was a completely different consistency. It was not baked, it looked like stove top and the classics Mac and cheese flavor was nonexistent. My kids wouldn’t even eat it, so I was not happy about that.
The cornbread, was not good at all. I ordered extra because I love cornbread, but every piece went in the trash. It had no flavor reminiscent of cornbread. It wasn’t even sweet and it was very dense.
I spent almost $70 including tip and only actually ate in totality, “two” items. The brisket sandwich and the gravy under the jerk chicken. Everything else went to waste.
I could only recommend the brisket sandwich. I advise you steer clear of any rice dishes. This place did not meet my standards or expectations for authentic southern cooking or barbecue.

The macaroni & cheese tastes spoiled. The catfish had some plastic fried with it. They forgot my cornbread for both orders we just submitted tonight and your meats are hot & the sides are cold as heck!!
