Reviews
The restaurant was busy, and we were seated quickly, which was great. However, our waiter came across as rushed and unfriendly—responses to questions were curt yes/no answers with little warmth or helpfulness.
We ordered calamari (with marinara), prosciutto pizza, spaghetti Bolognese, and carbonara. The complimentary bread they serve was stale and cold.
• The calamari was tough with a very small portion for the price. The accompanying marinara was unexpectedly spicy, which made it unsuitable for our 5-year-old. We had to ask the manager for a mild version as our waiter was nowhere to be found.
• The pizza advertised prosciutto, but it was prosciutto cotto (cooked ham) rather than the traditional cured prosciutto crudo—felt a bit misleading for an Italian spot.
• Spaghetti Bolognese was okay but very light on meat.
• The carbonara was the biggest disappointment: the sauce turned thick and cakey as it cooled, and what was supposed to be pancetta/bacon included large chunks of ham and noticeable fat pieces.
When I pointed it out, the waiter dismissed it casually (“that’s how Italians do it”), which didn’t match authentic carbonara standards.
Overall, the food felt more like a mid-tier chain experience (think Olive Garden level) but at significantly higher prices—easily our most expensive casual dinner in Playa so far. Service and quality didn’t justify the cost.
Our waiter never checked on us once, he was busy mooching all the tables that ordered alcohol.
If you’re craving solid Italian in Playa, we’d recommend trying Romeo’s Trattoria instead—the food and service there are consistently much better based on our experiences and what we’ve heard.
1 star (for the quick seating and busy vibe), but sadly not a place we’ll return to.
Our orders were taken and then a minutes or so later a basket of warm breads was placed on the table. The olive oil and balsamic vinegar at the table were very good.
She had the Mushroom Sauce Pasta and I had the Fettuccine Alfredo.
Bother dishes were excellent, not over sauced, pasta was perfectly al dente.
Wait staff were attentive, but not hovering like in the US. You have to ask for your check.
We actually stayed a good 25 minutes AFTER we were finished eating and paying the bill to just chat. Not once were we made to feel like we must leave since our meal was over.
Try Don Mario’s if you like good Italian food!
