12/14/25— Sunday morning we went out looking for lunch, and I was on a serious mission for beef soup. Google Maps led us to a place called Don Café, right on a very busy street. They have outdoor seating, which sounds nice—until you actually sit there.
There were guys drinking and celebrating like it was New Year’s Eve. Balloons kept popping BAM! every few minutes, sounding like tiny gunshots. Cars passing, music blasting, and me wondering if this was lunch or an action movie. I reminded myself of the verse:
“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
Clearly written for moments like this.
Across from me sat a man with two massive boxer dogs. These dogs looked like they could dismember a human without even spilling their coffee. I avoided eye contact and ate my soup very respectfully.
Because it was Sunday, the only soup available was Dominican-style soup. This soup does not play games. It has chicken, beef, ham, yuca, corn, and whatever else felt like joining the party. Honestly, it was delicious. My husband ordered a fish fillet and said it was too chewy—basically fish-flavored gum. But the rice and beans were excellent. My soup won first place . I even took some home on the flight for later lunch. Yes, soup travels too.
Parking was easy, which was a miracle on its own. The sign says they’re open 24 hours, but I don’t think that’s true every day. The lady tried to explain this, but it was impossible to hear her over the balloons, the guys, the cars, and—most importantly—a bird in a tree above us.
That bird was not singing. That bird was performing.
My husband said, “What is that?”
I said, “A bird,” but in my mind, I pictured him smoking a Cuban cigar, legs crossed, looking down at us, laughing, and singing extra loud on purpose.
Still, the croquetas and coffee were very good, and the service was fast. In the middle of the madness, I remembered:
“Give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
Even when balloons are exploding and birds are mocking you.
Would I go back? Maybe. But next time, I’m eating inside… or bringing earplugs ✈️

I sat outside and had a great time. The area is very clean and when the weather is nice, it’s a great spot to feel the breeze and hear the birds chirp.
The food was tasty. Had lunch special and came out very quick. For 1 person, I feel that the amount of time waiting for the food and being served is very quick. Got there at 2:50pm and had my food around 3pm.
The cortadito was also delicious. I will definitely come back.
