Our experience was overall good. Friendly staff, great service and lot of options on the menu. The food quality was good but it was very spicy for our taste with the dishes we ordered not having an option to go from “medium” to “mild” spice. If you like spicy Indian food, this place is definitely meant for you with an amazing spread. We absolutely loved the fresh sugarcane juice which we had after decades. Masala dosa was very good as well and the sambhar was not spicy. The dhaba chicken and paneer tikka kebab were both a but spicy for our taste. Overall, a good experience.

Tried the Nalli Gosh Biryani at Desi Chowrasta, and it was amazing. The mutton was tender and flavorful, and the biryani had a great Hyderabadi aroma with well-balanced spices. Portion size was good and overall tasted really satisfying.

One suggestion: please add less gravy to the piece. The butter gravy was a bit too much and overpowered the natural flavor of the biryani. With a lighter touch on the gravy, it would be perfect.

Still a great experience, and I’ll definitely come back!

So firstly, I went to this restaurant four times in total so coming to my first experience I Ordered Gongora chicken biryani and Bell Puri Biryani is good. I would rate four out of five but the Bell Puri is so bad. It was like so sweet we couldn’t able to complete that like four people I would write like Zero out of five. So my second experience so I ordered one piece Mandi I like the taste is good so I ordered two piece again so where the price got increase and the rice quantity remains them. I don’t know why it doesn’t make any sense so that’s totally unsatisfied and the third so you went there in afternoon starting hours like Around 1230 or 1 PM and we ordered ghee roast mutton Biryani And chicken biryani chicken biryani is Good but the ghee roast mutton biryani sucks so the rice was not cooked Properly so for that I got replacement of the Mandi 1 peice. Next comes my all-time favorite disaster so I Ordered on mutton, biryani and chicken majestic so I took like almost 45 minutes to get my majestic and Doesn’t have enough salt in it and it doesn’t look like majestic at all so I even went to the person and ask like hey I ordered chicken majestic. Is it the same that chicken majestic but I will attach the photo please let me know if it looks like Chicken majestic from India i’m coming to my final. It happened like two days ago I went to the restaurant I made up my mind to order something but at the counter, they added Small display about chicken special, pulao or Biryani. I thought I’ll give it a try and it also sucks I don’t know who is cooking the food, but the Chicken tandoori is good The pulao is very bad so It doesn’t have a salt in it so I have to ask for salt and add it in my food .

I am excited for this to be fully open with the rooftop bar and everything! It’s such a huge space. The restaurant is massive with lots of open space, indoor/outdoor seating, huge patio, roof top bar…and kudos to the owner for not overcrowding the space.

The line to order was a little long but it moved quickly. Food was ready within a decent time as well. The service was fantastic. Staff was courteous and friendly.

The food itself was great. Jalapeno chicken, biryani, Chowrastha curry were distinct in taste. The dosa and sambar tasted good too.

My only nitpick is some chairs and tables were wobbly and some seating definitely felt older than the restaurant. Maybe if they have some more/better furniture, it’ll definitely add to the charm of the restaurant

Speaking of charm, this place has it. The decor, paintings on the wall, they all felt like…well…home!

⭐⭐⭐ Desi Chowrastha – Indian Eatery in Overland Park: A New Spot With Plenty of Potential

Desi Chowrastha in Overland Park is a brand-new Indian eatery with a fun, inviting atmosphere and the potential to become a local favorite. The space is bright, lively, and spacious—great for groups, weekend gatherings, or a casual dinner out. I love the concept: a modern take on regional Indian street food and comfort dishes, all under one roof.

But like many new restaurants, there are a few areas where improvements could make the experience even better.

We tried several dishes, excited by the wide variety on the menu. Portions were generous, and everything arrived hot and fresh.

What Worked Well
• Large portions – Plenty to share.
• Vibrant, fun atmosphere – Lots of energy, great for casual dining.
• Friendly staff – Everyone was polite and helpful when we asked questions.
• Great concept – A modern, street-style Indian eatery is a welcome addition to OP.

The menu is massive—so much so that I found myself getting lost while reading it. While options are great, it can feel overwhelming, especially for guests new to Indian cuisine.

A helpful improvement would be:
• A “Today’s Specials” or “Chef’s Picks” section to guide guests.
• Highlighting bestsellers on the menu for easier decision-making.

As for the food, several dishes were very salty—much higher in sodium than expected. A lighter hand with seasoning or offering a mild/moderate spice level option would make a huge difference in enjoying the flavors.

Desi Chowrastha is still new, and you can tell they’re building their rhythm. The atmosphere is wonderful, the team is friendly, and the concept is strong. With a little refinement—especially simplifying the ordering experience and adjusting seasoning—they could truly shine.

Would I come back?
Sure, especially after they settle in. I see the potential, and I’d love to try the dishes again once things are more balanced.

If you enjoy bold flavors and big portions, Desi Chowrastha is worth a visit—just come hungry and curious, and hopefully they’ll continue growing into the great spot they’re meant to be.

The food was very tasty. Atmosphere was really good! Jalapeño Gobi was refreshing with very good combination of creaminess and spice. Crispy Corn was also pretty good! Crispy indeed! Vada pav was good. Tastes better with the side chutneys! Aloo tikki chat was good. There could have been a bit more tamarind chutney in the chat. But the overall atmosphere of the restaurant is pretty good with ample seating arrangement to handle bigger crowds. Also huge variety of dishes to choose from! I would definitely recommend people to visit here.

I’ll admit — I came in skeptical. A Texas-origin Indian franchise expanding into the Midwest usually means hit-or-miss results. Add in early reviews swinging from 1 to 5 stars, and I’d already formed three opinions, changed two, and promised myself not to judge until the first bite (hard to do on caffeine, nicotine, and mild existential dread).

We went for lunch around 1 PM — perfect time to dodge the crowd. Inside? Instant wow. Bright, artsy, eclectic — Bollywood meets Chiefs Kingdom. From the Guy Fieri quote (genius move) to the Post-It wall with Ganpati and the “Biryanis & Selfies” sign, the place oozes personality. The bar with beer taps adds a rare and welcome twist — an Indian restaurant where you could actually hang out, grab a pint, and watch the game. Music videos on twin projectors filled the room with color and rhythm. It’s a 10/5 atmosphere, easily.

Food (4/5):
Chettinad Goat Curry: Flavorful, hearty curry, but the meat-to-bone ratio leans heavily toward bone. I get the flavor logic — bones add depth — but when it’s mostly bone, it’s a tease. The rice portion is small, really only meant for one (most Indian entrees usually give enough for two or three). Naan was crisp and a good vessel, though not standout. Would happily pay more for a boneless version. 3.5/5

Chicken Tikka Frankie: My nostalgia street dish, done their way. Made with phulka roti, flavorful and crisp — but small enough to feel like the “kids meal” version of the real thing. Potato chips on the side weren’t fresh, and the missing egg layer kept it from being a true Tibbs Frankie moment. Still, solid flavor. 3.5/5

Jalapeño Chicken: The star. A creamy, tangy Indo-Chinese twist that deserves a permanent menu spot. Not deep-fried — just saucy, tender, and umami perfection for takeout reheats. 6/5 material.

Service (4/5):
Friendly and eager, though the ordering setup is a little confusing. You can order at the counter or wait for a server, which throws off new customers. Water’s self-serve bottled (a plus for me, but maybe not everyone). Love that they have a central spot for packing leftovers — low-pretense, efficient, and very “we’re still figuring it out” charming.

Atmosphere (10/5):
Playful contradictions everywhere — a “No Smoking” sign beside a “Chill Ga Bro” poster (irony with the spirit of incense). Above that, the “Herbal or Verbal” tea banter poster — with Rekha gazing from below — unintentionally channels peak Amitabh–Rekha meta-gossip energy. Pure cheek. Between that and the beer taps at the bar, Chowrastha feels like a place equally ready for a Chiefs watch party or a desi community moment — aunties, uncles, and old friends sharing food, laughter, and a little nostalgia.

All in all, I came in skeptical but left impressed. Chowrastha feels fresh — imperfect but full of promise, with a heartbeat that’s equal parts Bollywood, Kansas City, and pure creativity. The jalapeño chicken, the friendliness of the staff, and the whimsical ambiance together earn it a 4.5 rounded up to 5 stars.

We were visiting Kansas and decided to stop in for a meal here today. Since it was a long weekend, the place was quite busy. Ordering is done at the counter, and the food is brought to your table, while drinks need to be ordered separately at the bar.

We tried the Jalapeño Gobi, Plain Dosa, Ghee Karam Dosa, Fried Rice, and the Taj Mahal beer. The food was good and on the spicier side, but overall very enjoyable. They also provide complimentary water bottles, which was a nice touch. The ambience was pleasant and added to the overall experience.

Great ambience. Still limited menu available. Chai was average. Goat biryani had great flavor but had limited meat. Masala dosa was fresh. Servers lack experience as they are not sure about the menu and availability. Even they cannot recognize the pictured items. Tried chicken biryani which was below average. Idling was fresh but the samba and other sauces lacked flavor just was hot. Onion pakora was stale. Mango lassi was just sweet. Chicken tandoori was fresh n juicy but what too hot for our kids to eat.

I recently visited this new Indian restaurant, and it’s definitely one of the best additions to Kansas City’s food scene! It’s the biggest Indian restaurant in town with a huge selection of dishes to choose from, covering everything from street food to full entrées.
The ambiance is lively and welcoming, and the integrated bar adds a nice modern touch. The pani puri is hands down the best in Kansas City — fresh, flavorful, and perfectly crisp. The staff is friendly, and the service is prompt.
The only small downside is that some dishes were a bit on the spicier side, so keep that in mind if you prefer milder flavors. Otherwise, the pricing is very reasonable for the quality and quantity they offer.
Overall, I’d definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic Indian food with great service and atmosphere!
