NEGATIVE:
The food missed the mark! Really…. an Greek omelette
(€11.50) price point which turned out to be tasteless flat with a total absence of feta? A side of spinach and tomatoes placed quickly on the flat top; which didnt wow nor did it taste or seem very special.
PRESENTATION: Poor to non existent. KUDOS again to the lovely staff. EXCEPTIONAL
Will try again on my next visit to UAB.Fingers crossed for better grub.
€10.00 tip for the waitress
Thankfully my beloved Aunt Dixie, yes her real name, insisted we try Demetri’s in Homewood. I think words like Wow & Amazing are overused. I’d like to offer up a simple “YES!! As my choice to describe my experience. A simple yes to quality product, cooked with experience and an obvious love for their customers and calling. Demetri’s mastery of smoked wings, brisket and ribs begs for a special meat renaissance event. I picture Michelangelo, Beethoven and Matt Groening ravaging Demetri’s BBQ like a pack of Hyenas on a fresh kill.
You may want to queue the eye roll but seriously; Demetri’s established in 1961, IS IT! Look no further Birmingham—all others are pretenders. Ask for Alan, an admittedly over-educated but unpretentious big brother who will make you feel right at home while he honestly, patiently and skillfully outmaneuvers your dumb questions. He made our stay rememberable while educating us on the establishment’s history, menu, favorites while curating suggestions based on our brief interaction. If you have the appetite and wallet I recommend one of everything. Farewell, for now, from Boise and I’ll see you in February when we return. Thanks again Demetri’s
Today I had the stuffed poblano with shrimp. It comes with a delicious smokey red sauce, creamy and thick cheese sauce, and a little corn griddle cake. Also, yes, that is an entire half of an avocado! In addition to my entree, I had to try their famous “love” biscuit. You can order as is or grilled, and I had mine grilled. Wow. Not only is it a giant, it is so moist. This is quite possibly the best biscuit I have ever had. I look forward to coming back for one of their biscuit sandwiches.
There’s always a line out the door and today was no exception.
So of course, my son and I were very excited and starving so we knew this was gonna be a good experience! ….How wrong we were.
My son got pancakes with chocolate chips and they lacked any flavor at all and merely tasted like soggy bread.
The bacon was a bit burnt, but luckily that’s how I like it!
I got a side of cheese grits that were nothing less than water and sand.
The sawmill gravy was slop and clearly made from a store bought packet, and the biscuits were super dry.
$40 later I was left with a growling stomach and a hungry child.
The only positive I can give this place is at the service was a tentative and kind. Don’t waste your time or your money. Go somewhere else.
Fried okra was perfect and fried whole. The fire roasted veggies were so good.
