Reviews
When we stepped in, we loved how the hostesses were dressed in the diner-style attire, and the venue was very diner like. Felt very authentic. However, the music was this bad kiwi / inauthentic Christmas music, and that threw things off a bit.
When we sat down we were given menus and table service was decent. When we asked for things (service, colouring books etc) we were given exactly what we wanted which was fantastic, though it felt a little dismissive.
The milkshakes were fantastic, could not fault them; chocolate and raspberry. The snickers VIP shake was next level, seriously the best milkshake I’ve ever had! Loved the cream, snickers and nut pieces.
The burgers soon followed, and finally the fries. The Route 66 Burger was the best, and definitely a good flagship offering. The Cowboy Crunch burger was decent too, definitely everything that’s described. The cheesy gravy fries were really nice too, cheese, fries and gravy all perfect, and huge potion. Loved it all!
Overall, I highly recommend Deluxe Diner if you’re looking for something delicious and slightly different in New Plymouth.
Firstly, the bacon was forgotten for one of our meals and only noticed by the waitress after she had already left the table. When ordering, my father requested a mix of grain and white toast but received only white, with no extra toast as asked. I was also charged 50c for a takeaway box, which felt unnecessary.
Throughout the meal there was no check-in or asking how the meals were, we had to flag staff down ourselves.
Ordering the eggs Benedict was particularly frustrating. The price increased from $25.50 to $29.50 due to a rosti being added as an extra, despite the menu stating the dish comes with hash browns. I did ask for spinach and mushroom with bacon; however, I wasn’t advised this would incur an additional $6 charge. The menu wording implies bacon is included, so clearer communication would have been appreciated.
The wait staff came across as dismissive and seemed more focused on talking with coworkers than providing customer service.
For the price point, I expected clearer communication, better service, and accurate menu descriptions.
That said, I did enjoy the aesthetic of Deluxe Diner—the 50s vibe and music are great—but unfortunately the service let the experience down.
Tried the Snickers Milkshake with Cowboy Crunch and it was absolutely delightful and worth coming back for.
The burgers were huge and so satisfying, making the meal even more memorable.
