We ordered two sandwiches: a bagel with lox and a bagel with corned beef. The lox was fine, but the corned beef was shockingly bad—meager and nearly inedible, made up of burnt, crispy, crunchy little bits of meat. It was nothing like anything we’ve ever had there before.
I immediately called and spoke with Jason, even asking if the restaurant had recently been sold because I couldn’t believe how terrible the sandwich was. After some back and forth, we agreed that I would return the next day for a replacement corned beef sandwich at no charge. Everyone has an off day, and this felt like a fair resolution.
Unrelated to the meal, I then had a family emergency—my partner was rushed to the ER and spent six nights in the hospital. As a result, I wasn’t able to return until a week and a half later. Before heading over today, I called Jason to let him know I was on my way to pick up the replacement sandwich he had promised. At that point, he told me he was no longer authorized to remake it, that the owner wanted to speak with me but wasn’t in, and that he didn’t know how to reach him. If he really wanted to speak to me, he had every opportunity to reach out and I would have been happy to receive his call.
It’s incredibly disappointing—and frankly ridiculous—to alienate a loyal customer over this kind of flip-flop. Sadly, we won’t be returning.
I also like the Smoked White Fish.
This was probably more than I would typically pay for a sandwich but it was also more than I would typically receive. Worth the price if you’re craving something really delicious with high quality ingredients.
The place is a hole in the wall tucked away diagonally from the Mills-50 intersection. It’s takeout orders only, with a few small waiting tables inside. Very warm and inviting, the ambiance and the people inside. Very nice experience.
As for the food itself, we got two bialys. I got the Bacon (Egg, Smoked Jalapeno Cream Cheese), and I also got to try the Veggie Deluxe (Pickled Veggie Cream Cheese, Tomato, Radish, Herb Salad, Marinated Cucumber, & Red Onion).
Both were incredible. The bread was crisp and delightfully textured on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. A nice big hole, but still able to contain all the toppings within pretty well.
The Bacon was as it sounded. Crispy bacon, a well-fried egg, and ooey gooey cheese that drips everywhere. The veggie caught me off guard with how good it was. The pickled, the creamy cheese, the bite from the radish, the different bite from the red onion. Crispy and fresh and really good! Do recommend.
Overall, I recommend this place very much. Every bit of it was delicious, and there are endless amount of customizable combinations you can make. I will probably be back many more times before the end.
