Death & Taxes presents a modern perspective on wood-fire cooking that spans from dry aged cuts of meat and roasted oysters, to handmade pastas topped with smoked sauce and even grilled vegetable vinaigrettes. The space is anchored by a custom 2,000 pound grill, high ceilings, marble tables and leather banquettes. Comfortable, yet elegant, the ambiance evokes the feeling of a special occasion, but is just as comfortable for a spontaneous date night. For those seeking a show with their meal, there’s no better seat than the kitchen counter, with front-row views into the open kitchen. Those in the know also make the most of the onsite wine cellar, housed in an old bank vault.

Inventive New American dishes & cocktails in an intimate, swanky setting with an open kitchen.

Death and Taxes is definitely an experience worth having.

Walking in the door, the place has an unassuming feel to it. Simultaneously classy, but not over the top or stuck up.

The food menu was small, but thoroughly curated. All of the food has an element of smoke, char, or fire to it. There are lots of vibrant flavor pairings and interesting takes on classic dishes. After trying 6 different menu items, I am comfortable saying you cannot choose a bad option. The wine selection was excellent, with a lot of unique small vinyard wines.

Our server, Jess, was wonderful. She was very polite, had a strong knowledge of the menu, gave great recommendations, and was just attentive enough that we were never looking for her.

If you are a foodie willing to shell out for a unique and delicious meal, definitely give this place a try.

We went here for our anniversary. They took our coats. We had got seated at the bar. We saw everyone in the kitchen cooking. The service was impeccable, they always kept water in our glasses. The menu leads you down a great path of many different foods. We started with the green beans and it was great. I had kansas city strip and potatoes as a side. My girlfriend had agonlotti (stuffed pasta and mushrooms) with zuccini with whipped feta. Every dish was immaculate. The next time your in Raleigh and you need a fancy restaurant for anniversary’s, birthdays or just good dinner with someone. Come here.

The best food I’ve had in Raleigh! Went for a birthday dinner and the food and service were incredible. All the food was charred perfectly and beatifully prepared. They brought us complimentary drinks and were attentive and flexible. Highly recommend for a special night out, it’s worthy every penny.

I dined at Death and Taxes last night and had the pleasure of being served by Raymond. He was so friendly and accommodating, even with me being vegan. He knew the menu like the back of his hand and made the dining experience great! Will definitely be coming back

The food was enjoyable. We started with the NC shrimp and Oysters with Chili, both were very good with a sizeable portion of shrimp. For entrees we had the Agonlotti pasta with mushrooms and it was exceptional. We also had the Cavatelli pasta with braised pork and Pieve cheese. That was a disappointment, the flavors were overpowered by the amount of cheese on the entree and the portion was very small. We finished with the coconut layer cake , also very good.

I am not typically blown away by restaurants, but Death and Taxes in Raleigh checked all of the boxes.

The open kitchen concept not only keep the restaurant warm, but the aroma of dinner being prepared permeates the restaurant.

After getting your your table, you can order cocktails either tried and true or inventive remakes of old classics.

The local oysters make a great starter. Fresh caught seafood from the Carolina coast are well reprinted. The steak options are world-class.

Desserts complement the whole experience as well. I’m travel to Raleigh just for this restaurant.

Amazing Birthday Celebration

I celebrated my birthday at Death & Taxes in December 2024 with family and friends, and the whole experience was incredible. Everyone in our group had a great time. The Second Rodeo cocktail was a standout—perfectly balanced with a smoky twist that I’ll definitely come back for.

The food was delicious from start to finish—each dish was packed with flavor and cooked with care. The wood-fired cooking really added something special. The atmosphere was cozy yet modern, and the open kitchen made the experience even more engaging.

The staff was attentive and made us feel welcome throughout the night. It was a memorable evening, and I’d highly recommend Death & Taxes for birthdays, celebrations, or just a great night out in Raleigh.

A very enjoyable upscale restaurant with a “wood-fired” theme. The oysters were amazing – very lightly broiled, enough to melt the delicious butter. The tartare was equally enjoyable. The crab tagliatelle pasta was very well-cooked and extremely rich (dare I say almost too rich). The NC fish had very crispy skin and a great Asian bent to it, with XO sauce and coconut milk in the purple rice. I enjoyed all the sides we got – crispy potatoes, tangy Brussels, and roasted beets. The service was warm and the atmosphere was pleasant.

The bread pudding was heavenly. Can say with certainty that it was the best dessert I’ve ever had. We had a double date here while celebrating our engagement. The staff were top-notch and accommodating. My fiancé dropped his fork and a few seconds later a server provided him a new one on a silver platter. It doesn’t get better than that. Awesome experience all around.
