This pains me to write.

Years ago, before the ownership change, I left a glowing review. Unfortunately, this one is the opposite — and I feel like it needs to be said.

I’m 49 years old, originally from Virginia, now living near Minneapolis. I’ve been eating Dave’s Pizza for as long as I can remember. Once a year, we make the trip home to stock up on frozen pizzas and, of course, grab fresh ones. Always the same order: large sausage and pepperoni. Walking into Dave’s was always an experience — that unmistakable smell, the sound of the dough roller, the feeling that nothing had changed.

I’m a third-generation Dave’s customer. Now my 15-year-old son is the fourth generation. My family knew Ray Peloquin, and when they opened their shop in Big Lake, it was modeled after Dave’s in Virginia. I’d like to think I know a little about pizza — and I definitely know Dave’s.

I visited on Sunday, March 1st. I ordered two large sausage and pepperoni pizzas and bought 21 frozen pizzas to take home. I’ll admit, when I called a few days before our visit, I saw the recent negative reviews and felt worried that things had changed under the new ownership.

When we walked in, I immediately noticed something different. There was no sound of dough being rolled out. The familiar smell that I’ve associated with Dave’s for decades was gone. Instead, there was a burnt smell lingering in the shop. Even my 4-year-old commented that it didn’t smell good.

We grabbed our pizzas and did what we’ve always done in the winter — parked at the end of Chestnut Street and ate in the truck.

When I opened the box, my heart sank. I could tell instantly this wasn’t the same pizza. The cheese appeared lower quality, and the pizza was unbelievably greasy — I have never had a Dave’s pizza this greasy in my life. It wasn’t cut into the classic bite-sized squares with a piece of sausage and pepperoni on each slice. The toppings looked rushed, scattered without care. And the crust — it was severely undercooked. We couldn’t lift a piece without the toppings sliding off or the slice folding into a greasy, floppy mess.

I read the new owner’s post about the ovens and the new conveyor system, explaining the changes. I understand that sometimes updates are necessary. But while the taste may still resemble what it once was, the pizza itself has been fundamentally changed — and not for the better.

This isn’t the Dave’s I grew up with. It’s nowhere near the quality it used to be. It honestly makes me sad. One of the things I’ve always looked forward to when visiting the Range was stopping at Dave’s. That tradition meant something to my family. Now, I’m not sure we’ll make our yearly pizza trip anymore, and that’s a tough thing to admit.

To the owners: I understand that businesses evolve. But when something has built decades of loyalty, tradition, and multi-generational memories, you have to be careful about changing the very things that made it special. Maybe the old ovens weren’t perfect — but they were part of what made Dave’s, Dave’s. Even replacing them with the same style might have preserved more of that legacy. The conveyor system simply isn’t the same.

I truly hope this feedback is taken to heart. Dave’s has meant a lot to my family for generations. I’d love nothing more than to see it return to what made it so special.

I grew up in Eveleth and when I left years ago every time I went home to see the family I had to stop at Dave’s Pizza to get the famous Dave’s Sub and a sausage pizza. Aww it was always the best, last weekend I came home and my daughter and I bought everything a sausage pizza , Dave’s sub, and 5 frozen pizzas … gross what did you guys do??? The sauce was disgusting it tasted like the sauce came out of a can. Something I grew up with and looked forward to every time I came home is no longer. Sad someone new buys the best place and has changed what used to be the best pizza in town. Sorry if your looking for the Dave’s Pizza we know don’t go to Dave’s Pizza go to Snickers it’s way better than this!

Oh Dave’s subs… How I love thee, let me count the ways! There’s something so great about something that is seemingly very simple. There’s not that much in the way of toppings. It’s not overly sauced or seasoned. But when all of those ingredients get onto that fresh Italian bread. Oh man, it creates a bit of heaven for your taste buds and stomach. I picked up two subs forgetting that they are 15 inches long. So one sub is easily shared by two people. I also picked up a couple of frozen pizzas. I hadn’t had a Dave’s Pizza in a long time and these pizzas were the quintessential Minnesota bar pie. Outstanding and chock full of cheese. The folks serving stuff up are great. The location is a little wonky and parking is a pain if they are busy but the joint has been there forever. Strictly a takeout joint…but there have been times when the sub hasn’t made it out of the parking lot.

me and my husband are just passing through virginia, we were hoping to go bowling at the alley, we walk in the place and there’s not any lanes it’s league night so ok back to the hotel for us,, placed an order despite recent negative reviews,, a cheese pizza aka the test of time for any pizza joint. it was damn good,, creatively cut into very small squares and appropriately greasy. just a good old fashioned pizza pie at the end of the day. you’ve gotta support the local spots,, you know,, give dave a chance

The first time I had Dave’s was at work and no one knew where it came from so we started ordering different pizzas until we recognized the box. Maybe add your name to the box or a sticker on the box so others can find you easily. Pizza is so so so good, my coworker and I keep ordering it!

On the spur of the moment we decided to get Dave’s Pizza tonight. My daughter called in the order and the person repeated it exactly as ordered. We get home to eat and the small pepperoni and sausage pizza was actually a large pizza with a few pepperoni on it. But the best addition to the pizza were the two long hairs that we found on top of it. At least the sub was right even with very little meat on it. Normally things are good, but defiantly not tonight!

Never come here often enough. It’s the one thing I remember having when stay with grandma and grandpa in town when we where kids. Things change, but not my hankering for a Dave’s on a Friday after a few cold ones

Dave’s Pizza is an absolute gem! The delivery service was fantastic, and the Dave’s Sandwich was massive—seriously, it was ridiculously huge. The Hog Wings were incredible, kind of like ribs, and we couldn’t get enough of them. As for the pizza? It just might be the best I’ve ever had. We’re not from Minnesota, so this is a completely honest review. It’s a classic hole-in-the-wall pizza joint, and isn’t that exactly what we’re all searching for? A definite must-try!
