TO LIVE AND FRY IN L.A. In 2017, four childhood friends came up with a simple concept — take Nashville Hot Chicken and make it better than anyone else in America. With only a couple thousand dollars to their name, they boot-strapped a pop-up concept in a parking lot in East Hollywood serving a simple menu of tenders, sliders, fries, and kale slaw — they created a viral cult following with lines consistently over an hour long.

However, I soon realized I was wrong. I would describe this place as “not quite fast” food – which isn’t a bad thing , just something to be aware of . We waited about 11 minutes and decided the restaurant was a little too people-y so we went to eat in the car. When we opened our boxes we were shocked. The “ not chicken “
sliders are huge . The cauliflower itself was very thick, and the breading was crispy and flavorful, and the heat level (hot) was spot on. The fries were hot and well seasoned.
I initially thought the price was a little expensive for two tenders, but they were huge. I could only eat one slider and some of the fries so, I got two meals out of one. My son got the two chicken tenders and fries and also ate half – so “4 meals and two drinks for $36 “ wasn’t bad and still less than McDonald’s .
He loved his fries, and decided that next time he would upgrade his heat level a notch from “light mild “ to “mild“ to add a little more flavor.
We would both definitely come here again.
* my son had already eaten half a tender in the photo.
I’m a big spice lover and can usually handle a lot of heat. The reaper slider kicked my butt. Only ate half and messed with my stomach the rest of the day. (They use a waiver for a reason)
Was not expensive at all.
All and all will go back again. Will not attempt the reaper again. I’ll stick to extra hot.
I would eat it if I was drug there by force, but I definitely wouldn’t go out of my way to go there for lunch just because.
I went back to try it again.
Got the #2, an extra tender, no drink – cost was $18+
The salt level was much better this time around. Spice level was good.
The wait for the food was longer than I would have expected (15+ minutes?) since there was no person in front of me when I ordered. But maybe just caught at a bad time.
Summary:
Good quality chicken.
Prices are high, but I do believe you get what you pay for.
Be prepared to wait.
Bring your own ranch.
October 2024:
Got the #3. Slider, tender, and fries. No drink. Cost was $14.
A little on the pricier side.
The good: The spice level was actually really good.
The bad:
The worst part for me was the level of saltiness of the chicken and fries. It was almost as if two different cooks salted the food without knowing the other already did it.
And then a 3rd line cook added in a pinch more salt just to make sure the other 2 didn’t forget.
Maybe mine was an outlier, but it was rough. I could only finish a few bites.
The people taking the orders were very nice. There’s also a person that wipes tables. She was very nice. I think this was their 2nd or 3rd day open – so there were 10-15 people standing around waiting for their food.
Summary:
If you have an extra few bucks, don’t mind the wait, and love *really really really* salty food – this is your jam.
Otherwise, other places chicken tenders are just as good if not better (Cane’s, CFA, Popeye’s).
Also, they don’t have ranch. That seems like a huge miss.
