TO LIVE AND FRY IN L.A. In 2017, four childhood friends came up with a simple concept — take Nashville Hot Chicken and make it better than anyone else in America. With only a couple thousand dollars to their name, they boot-strapped a pop-up concept in a parking lot in East Hollywood serving a simple menu of tenders, sliders, fries, and kale slaw — they created a viral cult following with lines consistently over an hour long.

I ordered the slider and tenders combo, and the chicken was outstanding. The tenders were thick, juicy, and perfectly crispy on the outside — you can tell they season the chicken itself and not just the coating, because the flavor runs all the way through. The sliders were just as good, with the sauce, pickles, and chicken all coming together in the best way. The spice level was exactly what I hoped for: bold, flavorful, and satisfying without being overwhelming. The chicken really shines and has that signature Nashville-style kick while still tasting rich and smoky, not just spicy.
The Dave’s sauce and pickles added the perfect balance, giving a creamy and tangy contrast to the heat. Every bite felt really well-put-together, and you can tell they take pride in the seasoning and quality of the chicken.
The only thing I would point out is the fries. They were hot and crispy, which is great, but the seasoning felt a bit light. Compared to the bold, flavorful chicken, the fries tasted a little plain and could use more seasoning to match the strong flavors of the rest of the meal. They weren’t bad just mild in comparison.
Aside from that, everything was excellent. The portion sizes were generous, the food was fresh, and the flavors were on point. Dave’s definitely lives up to its reputation for great hot chicken. I would absolutely come back and would recommend it to anyone who loves crispy, juicy chicken with real flavor and heat. With just a little more seasoning on the fries, it would be a perfect meal.
That said, the staff was very pleasant and hospitable and the decor of the place was fun and upbeat. Change the batter and sauce offerings and you’re on to something. As of now, I’m wondering how you were able to franchise a significantly inferior product to the many other chicken places out there. Zaxbys and Birdcall are two that come to mind.
3 out of 5 stars
I was really looking forward to trying Dave’s Hot Chicken, but my first visit wasn’t quite the experience I was hoping for. To be fair, it was the grand opening, so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt that things will improve with time.
The biggest issue? The noise. With a packed house and staff shouting out order numbers every minute — “Number 2221! Number 1442!” — it made it nearly impossible to have a conversation. The energy was high, but the chaos made it hard to enjoy the meal.
I ordered 2 sliders, fries, and a large drink for about $20. It was filling, and the chicken was good, but I was disappointed that the “medium” heat level had almost no spice at all. I was expecting a little kick.
I plan to come back in a couple weeks once the dust settles and give it another shot. For now, it’s a solid 3-star start with room to grow.
