But the shrimp on the top was a little bit sweet.
Fish tasted fresh, and all the ones we tried had a different flavor profile. The peach shirome was interesting and refreshing, we were huge fans. We absolutely loved the oysters! To quote my boyfriend, “this might be one of the best oysters I’ve ever had.” Great blend of flavors with the lemon and roe and sauce. Not pictured are the shishito peppers which were good, but actually pretty spicy which shocked us a bit.
We sat at the bar and the sushi chef was very attentive to us. As we were ordering with the waitress, the chef would hear our order and get started immediately. Staff also came around to refill my hot tea at least three times. The space is quite deceiving since it looks small on the outside but there is an entire back area that might be better for larger groups.
Overall great food, service, and price – would come back again.
I went here for the first time and I enjoyed my dinner. They have great selections day by day with special fishes that I’ve never tried before.
Everything were very fresh and price were reasonable. I will definitely come back later to try different seasonal fishes.
Particularly enjoyed the daily specials of sushi from Toyosu fish market. I can see why some people found the portions small but it tasted delicious so I would get it again.
Croquette and tempura were good.
I found the tuna salmon avocado tower awkward to eat and preferred soy sauce and wasabi on it rather than the sweet miso sauce provided, but I guess I like my miso on specific foods. Very generous with the avocado and it was perfectly ripe.
Tamogoyaki was well executed – excellent flavor and the chashu had a good texture and was yummy. The egg wasn’t as fluffy as I might like but it was delicious and I’d definitely recommend it.
Ugh now I’m hungry and want the food. Definitely felt like a izakaya with a sushi focus; felt very authentic!
Decent spot in san Mateo downtown for Japanese food with a creative twist.
The ambiance was good and service was a tad slow. We enjoyed most of the dishes. However there is one dish that completely ruined our experience.
Their chanko nabe hotpot had absolutely no flavor. The soup was so bland it felt like they forgot to add seasoning. It honestly was like eating chicken and veggies that’s boiled in plain water. I usually don’t like very heavy flavors and even I found it hard to eat because of the blandness. The meat (wagyu slices and chicken) were both overcooked and really hard to chew. We had to add soy sauce ourselves as they didn’t provide any dipping sauce.
Recommend their tapas – the tamagoyaki and peach shirome were both really good.
