Dane’s is back open for 2025 and that means summer has officially started in Iowa!
Hopefully no tornados this time around lol — just soft serve, root beer floats, and sunshine.
This place is such a local treasure. It’s a cute family-run stand and they’ve been slowly upgrading the seating area each year which I love. Still feels nostalgic, but with a little more space to hang and enjoy.
Tried the mini root beer float today and it was super solid — definitely recommend if you want something refreshing but not too heavy. Also, as a dairy-free ally, I have to shout out their sodas and slushies — those are the only non-dairy options but it’s nice that there’s something if you’re tagging along with friends!
Prices are super affordable, the servings are massive, and the vibe is just happy. It’s the kind of place that makes you smile for no reason. Can’t wait to go back all summer long.

Always a great time, though once in a while the owner/other adults will be gone and it seems harder for the school kids to handle it on their own. Always delicious ice cream!! I don’t usually like vanilla ice cream, but this stuff is heavenly and flavorful. Topping taste is on point. They have napkins and a trash by the counter, as well as covered outdoor seating areas.
There’s even a walking/biking trail just past Dane’s and the auto shops.

Unique, delicious offerings.
Best in Iowa for soft serve ice cream? Quite possible, because the variety of options and combinations of soft serve makes brings competitive overlap with froyo businesses. A local gem.

Horrible experience! Nothing but young kids working. We ordered their NEW gallon twister for $13.21. None of the employees knew what I was talking about. They were laughing at us, wanted to know where we seen that they were offering this. I said it’s outside on your menu board and online Facebook post. They were able to locate it in their cash register. Then after paying and pulling up to the next window. The “manger” Adam Butler said he needed to either give us a half gallon or charge us more money because they made a mistake on their price. I said that’s not our fault, we have already ordered and paid… He hen closed the window and made a phone call and we could hear them laughing at us and making fun of us for asking for the managers name. He came back to the window and told me he is going to honor our price since that’s what we “thought” we saw.. umm.. it’s what was on your menu it’s not what we thought we saw. Very unprofessional and poor leadership if you don’t make sure your employees are fully trained.

This place is a classic and worthy of that title! Delicious soft serve and fave is a hot fudge milkshake. My Grandfather would take us here growing up, and I make it a point to visit whenever I come to Iowa for a visit.

If you ever find yourself in Iowa City, don’t miss this iconic soft serve ice cream shop. It opened back up in early May after the usual seasonal closure. We count down the days during the winter months There is a drive through or you can order at the window & enjoy the day at a picnic table.

We can still order a kids’ strawberry cone with sprinkles like we did 7 years ago. Dane’s Dairy is a great institution, one of our Iowa City essentials.
I like that Willow Creek Park just down the trail is getting a new playground; good combination!

Yummy ice cream but they don’t have the best open hours. Great place to bike and walk to as there have a walk up window. It’s an Iowa City staple and it’s a must go!

Drove through in the evening when it was busy. It didn’t look like there was a single employee over the age of 20, but they were fantastic. Moved the line along quickly, were clearly working well as a team, and made the best shake I’ve had in ages. Despite what I’ve seen at the nearby Dairy Queen, this is proof you can have a young staff and still run a great business.

One star is giving them credit. I order a shake. They tried to give me cups of ice cream twice. Then when I said something about being over charged I didn’t even get refund. When I got my shake it had no ice cream and was literally just strawberry milk instead. I grew up loving this place from when I was a child but I will never recommend it to anyone ever again. I miss the old owners who treated a customer with respect!
