Wachsmuth opened the doors in 1907, five generations have been involved in carrying on the family tradition. It had been a while since I’d been here. But the quality and service haven’t slipped. This place is a Portland institution for seafood, esp oysters! Try the raw but definitely try the Rockefeller style. And also try a cup of the best chowder in the city. I’m partial to the smoked salmon chowder. So good!!

Amazing food! Everything from the clam chowder to fried oysters to the fish and chips were all delicious! Even the story of it being a very long time family owned place to the historical clippings and plate collection, made for a great atmosphere. Servers and shuckers were all friendly, and on top of it all, highly recommend!

We absolutely loved this place!
When you order the oysters they give you a mix which is great because they are different sizes and flavors. We had the smoked salmon chowder and the clam chowder: both were amazing! I had never had smoked salmon in a chowder before. We sat at the quaint bar and chatted with the owner/bartender, who was quite pleasant and talkative. I would definitely recommend trying this place out. And if I lived in Portland I would be there all the time!

Some of the best food I’ve had in a long time. Oysters were as good if not better than the oyster house in Boston. Nothing disappointed at all. Highly recommend!!! Boozy shots very well done. Half shell amazing! Fish tacos best I’ve had in years and the gumbo better than Louisiana local. If you have the opportunity make it a must stop!!

I Walked into Dan & Louis’ Oyster Bar freezing and found out pretty quick that a reservation is the move — didn’t know that beforehand, so we had to wait. They sat us on the bar side, and I honestly didn’t even realize how big the place was until later when it opened up more. It definitely felt like they knew I wasn’t from around there, and we ended up at the smallest table possible.The clam chowder was really good, though creamy, comforting, and worth ordering. I’m an oyster snob and I know my stuff, and while the oysters weren’t bad, none of them really stood out to me. To be fair, they were very reasonably priced, so that probably plays into it. Not a terrible experience, just not blown away. Chowder was the star, oysters were okay, and next time I’d definitely make a reservation.

I saw a news article this local business that was struggling to stay afloat in Portland. A treasure that had been in business since 1906 – certainly becoming part of Portlands deep history and a fixture of the community.
First – we showed up at 4:45pm. The restaurant was half empty. We were told it would be a 20 minute wait… Ok .. but the place is half empty. An hour later, we were still sitting in the front entrance. Other guests, honestly raging Karen’s who demanded an immediate seat, came in and were seated before us. A young Hispanic gentleman with tight curly hair was attempting to control the front of the restaurant but he clearly has zero clue what he was doing.
After over an hour of waiting they managed to find us a table for two in the bar. Really? The restaurant is still half empty.
We ordered oysters fried fishes, and cioppino. The smoked salmon fried fish was so dry it was almost inedible. It was like chewing on rubber. The cioppino was literally the very worst I’ve ever had in my entire life. It literally tasted like they opened a can of crushed tomatoes, poured it in a saute pan, tossed in chunks of garlic and onion and wine, and then only cooked it half way. The cioppino broth literally tasted like raw uncooked wine and canned tomatoes. Really?
You know, while I love to see small businesses like this succeed, these people need to hang up the towel. Sometimes old energy needs to be removed so new energy can come in and revitalize the town. This oyster bar has seen its day. I would not waste any money here.

I got the fried fish sandwich and clam chowder. I love both. They were wholeheartly handled.
The chowder is really delicious (and creamy), with lots of chewy clam (my favorite). I think I enjoyed it way more than the number 1 place in pike place Seattle. I’ve had a lot of chowder at different places and most of them are “just another chowder”.
This one is hands down I’d love to go back and their oysters look SO good that I am gonna find time to try it out. (Even though I am not so much an oyster eater anymore)
The fish sandy does not disappoint. Simple but delicious. The bun was soft with a crunchy buttery edge, without being soggy after put in my to-go box.
Parking was not difficult to find. The block is quite quiet but I hope more people could support their business!

Had a hankering for oyster and after a quick google search, found Dan & Louis. This place has history and is a no frills establishment with many varieties of oysters on rotation. They shuck them right before they are delivered to your table…I had 1/2 dozen $18 and then had 3 more at $3/oyster.

I love Dan & Louis’ Oyster Bar. I was first taken here by my father around 60 years ago. I was fascinated by all of the wooden walls and the massive collection of plates and other things attached to them. There was an enormous King Crab on display in one room. The largest Oyster shell I’ve ever seen is attached to the wall in the entryway. They used to have tin buckets on each table full of Oyster crackers to snack on while waiting for your food to arrive. There was a person shucking oysters next to the entryway. I fell in love with their fried oysters and they are still my favorite. I took my younger son there last week and he ordered the PoBoy Oyster sandwich. He raved about it so we went back again yesterday and my older son joined us. I got the PoBoy and now I have another favorite.
