Cultura is the exception that proves the rule.
Yes, it’s primarily a pizza place, but it’s one of the very few in South Florida doing actual AVPN-style Neapolitan pizza to Naples standards, not the vibes-based approximation most places serve.
I should probably disclose my bias up front: I am not a Neapolitan diehard. It’s softer, it’s wetter, and it’s fundamentally a fork-and-knife pizza. And if you’re going to serve me one, I want a straight Margherita, because the more toppings you add, the more the whole thing turns into a structural engineering problem.
There are some real differences here compared with other local Neapolitan spots, including places like Scuola Vecchia in Parkland, which has formal AVPN certification and is excellent. Cultura is running a high-end Italian Moretti Forni oven, roughly a $13,000 unit, capable of holding precise, stable temperatures while still running at about 930°F to hit the 90-second cook window. Just as important in South Florida is the ventilation. Heat is pushed up and out, so the dining room doesn’t feel like a blast furnace, which is no small feat in this climate.
Qualitatively, the pie is very good. I ordered half Margherita and half ’Nduja, the spicy Calabrian meat paste, think spreadable hot soppressata. The underside shows clean, even spotting. The cornicione has proper leopard marks. The rim has a light crunch, and the center stays soft and pliable, precisely as a Neapolitan pie should. Fresh mozzarella, simple, bright San Marzano tomato sauce with fresh basil, garlic, and extra virgin olive oil.
Quality ingredients, a Neapolitan pizza executed to technical perfection.
If you were served this in Naples at a serious shop, you’d call it legit, because it is. And to add to the legitimacy, you’ll hear proper Italian spoken here, not the bastardized version uttered by third to fifth generation Italian Americans.
It is also, as expected, a wetter, fork-and-knife pizza, so you want to eat it here and now. This won’t travel well. Ideally, you’d like a glass of red wine or a birra alongside it, but there’s no alcohol here, unfortunately (EDIT: license in progress). The consolation prize is solid: Kimbo espresso, good lattes, and a legit dessert case. You could just as easily come in the morning for a cornetto as you could after lunch.
Beyond the Neapolitan pies, they also offer a range of focaccias if you’re in the mood for something airier (and better suited for takeout), plus sandwiches and salads that make this feel like a proper Southern Italian cafe, not just another pizza counter.
Bottom line: South Florida does not need more pizza places.
But it does need more places that take it this seriously.
My only reservation (gripe) is not germane to this place specifically, as it’s the third place with this $8 price tag…..for a slice of pizza. How in the world did we get here? I make my own 48 hour, bulk cold fermented dough and own a wood fired pizza oven, so I understand the work involved in a craft product….but $8?
As good as it is, I believe we’re at a place that is knocking at the door of price prohibitive when it comes to a slice of pizza
Returned on 12/27 and got their Panini Neopolitan, mortadella, prosciutto, salami baked into the bread, with reggiano and pecorino cheeses, inside is a hard boiled egg….this was excellent
The espresso alone is worth the trip. It instantly transported me back to Italy; rich, bold, smooth, and perfectly balanced. It’s the closest thing I’ve tasted in the U.S. to the real Italian caffè experience. One sip and you’re hooked.
And their Napoli-style Margherita pizza? Remarkable. Even without a wood-fired oven, it’s better than anything I had while actually in Napoli. The crust has great texture, the tomatoes taste incredibly fresh, and the mozzarella melts into a beautiful, flavorful balance. Each bite is pure Italian comfort.
The team is warm, welcoming, and genuinely attentive. You can tell they love what they do, and it shows in the quality of every detail; from the food to the service to the atmosphere.
If you’re looking for authentic Italian flavor right here in Boca Raton, Cultura South Italian Café is a must-visit. An exceptional gem that I can’t recommend highly enough.
Great little location right on the corner of US-1 and 9th. Simple, very clean, with a respectable assortment of pizzas, salads, sandwiches and pastries.
The chef and owner is classically trained from Italy, and it shows. One must pay attention to the quality and flavor of the key ingredients.
The pizza style is mainly neapolitan, but there are other varieties, from focaccia-style pizza with potatoes and porchetta, to pizza ‘parigina’ (parisian) with flaky filo dough… the list does on!
Pastries are classic ‘petite’ pastries, and simply delicious. The espresso and cappuccino are properly made, like in Italy (no ludicrous portions or dopey names).
Open all week, every day. Wonderful family operation, always pleasant with a smile. Online orders available.
If you crave for a nice, clean, quiet corner of Italy, and experience authentic, delectable simplicity without the obnoxious hustle and bustle of downtown Boca Raton, this is it!
Highly recommended
I ordered the MORTAZZA (mortadella, ricotta, pistachio cream, crushed pistachios, and arugula) and wow… it was unreal. So fresh, so flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The bread was truly out of this world! Crispy on the outside but light and airy on the inside. Every bite was perfection.
Highly recommend if you’re looking for authentic, fresh, and thoughtfully made sandwiches. I’ll definitely be back! Wish I lived closer!!
We keep going back to try different things.
They are new so they are still tweeting the atmosphere but it’s clean and the seats are super comfortable-
Love everything but the summer salad, the focaccia chicken pesto sandwich and the pizza are all excellent. Their desserts are amazing too. Actually great to bring if your a house guest to a host!!!
