Now let’s talk about the food. It was… okayish. Not bad, but not something that blew my mind either. It’s on the expensive side and when you’re in Texas, you kind of expect both great flavor and good portions. I wasn’t disappointed, but I also wasn’t as impressed as I expected based on the reviews.
Service was a bit slow — we only ordered a few items but they took longer than expected. Most of the dishes were good and some were actually delicious. But they somehow managed to mess up my omelette… and honestly I’m still wondering how that happens.
I like exploring new flavors and that’s one of the reasons I try different places. Cuba 1918 has charm and history, but it may not be for everyone. For me, it’s a place I’m glad I tried, but probably not my favorite spot in town.
Where to start? Deeply regretted my decision to come here (with my vegetarian CIL). I found it strange how greasy the small side order of fries were given there were so few of them. My husband ordered the espresso coffee. He said it was not $7 good. He ordered the Cuban sandwich, black beans, and white rice for his meal. He said he hadn’t had that level of bland food in San Antonio in a long time.
My CIL, being vegetarian and her choice to pick this place, she ordered several different sides to have a variety. She said the yucca fries were not seasoned, but they were at least crunchy. The sofrito potatoes were the only vegetables that she said were at least seasoned. She also commented on how bland the small bowl of black beans were as well as the rice.
I had a glance at the food on the table next to us before the waitress came and thought it best to simply order a hamburger with fries. Hamburger was definetly the safe option. The fries, however, greasy…left a film on my tongue. Do yourself a favor, don’t order the tea.
If you are in a wheelchair, then you would find it a challenge to use the bathroom as the toilet is on like a stage/large step. The entry to this place also has different level of steps.
We came on a night that they had live music. Little loud to comfortably have a conversation, but at least it was good.
Nice staff.
Not worth the drive, definetly not worth the price, and wouldn’t recommend to family or friends if I intend on keeping them.
Also, this place is BYOB.
So to sum up, if you have a hot date on Friday night, or even if you’re just hungry and like live music, give this place a try it’s worth it.
I’ve had a great Cuban sandwich, and this was nothing like it. I’ve had regular sandwiches, and they were better than this.
However, the bad part was the music. I like Jazz.. I’ve gone to jazz bars and I enjoyed my time there -this however was not enjoyable -it was torturous. The band looked like it was having fun and that’s great, but you need to make sure the audience is enjoying what you’re putting out there. I love music I love good food – we left early because the food was okay the music was not.
If we go back, I believe it’ll probably be to taste the coffee. I’d like a nice coffee place on the south side, and maybe this will be it.
It will not be my place for a Cuban sandwich.
We decided to have lunch there since we were already there.
He ordered a double Cuban burger that was probably the size of a slider. I ordered a 20$ house special which was the Havana plate (pork) with rice and beans. My food arrived colder than room temperature.
Since there was no restaurant week special we decided to order something off the menu we’d seen online. But those items weren’t available either. They didn’t even have the Cuban sodas.
This was a terrible experience all around. They apologized but didn’t offer anything as an apology.
The building dates from 1918, according to the owner, and has a charming, attractive look inside and out. This is a great place for a romantic date.
